WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – A delegation of four San Diego State's men's tennis players opened the Aztecs' second tournament of the fall campaign at the North Ranch Invitational on Friday, splitting a pair of doubles matches before sweeping all four singles encounters on the courts of North Ranch Country Club.
Victor Castro and Joe Tyler were double winners for SDSU, joining forces to defeat the Nebraska tandem of Roni Hietaranta and Victor Moreno Lozano by an 8-6 count in doubles play.
Tyler also recorded his first singles victory in an Aztec uniform, outlasting UNLV's Milos Dabic in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, while Castro downed the Rebels' Anton Ornberg in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
SDSU's Johannes Seeman and Alexander Mändma were not as fortunate in doubles against the Nebraska duo of William Gleason and Nic Wiedenhorn, as the Aztec pairing dropped a narrow 8-6 decision.
However, Seeman regrouped in singles by dispatching UNLV's Zac Brodney, 6-4, 7-6(5), while Mändma emerged triumphant in three sets against an unattached open player, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(3).
The North Ranch Invitational continues on Saturday when San Diego State squares off against UNLV in doubles, followed by singles competition vs. Loyola Marymount. The tournament also features competitors from Hawai'i and Pepperdine.
