SAN DIEGO -- Ty France continued his hot streak at the plate into the second half of August.
In the MLB, France (2013-15) started all 13 games for Seattle over the past two weeks with one at second base and the rest at first base. The last couple weeks, France batted .345 with a .362 on base percentage, four home runs, 10 runs and nine RBIs. On Aug. 19, in Texas, France launched a 400-foot, two-run homer to left field off Joe Barlow to give the Mariners a 9-7 lead in the 11th inning. The homer would be enough to get Seattle a victory, as it held Texas to a sole run in the bottom of the inning. The next day, France took Houston's Pedro Baez deep for a solo homer in the eighth inning. On Aug. 22, he hit another home run, this one off Astros closer Ryan Pressly, to tie the game in the ninth inning. In the 11th, he singled in J.P. Crawford, the go-ahead run to give Seattle a lead it would not relinquish. The next night in Oakland, France hit one out off Oakland closer Lou Trivino to tie the game at three in the ninth inning. The Mariners struck twice more in the ninth to hand the Oakland bullpen its third blown lead in four games. On Aug. 29, he started off the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning to help Seattle to a 4-3 victory over Kansas City. On the season, France is batting .292 with a .359 on base percentage, 16 home runs, 68 runs and 60 RBIs. The Mariners are in third place and trail Houston by 8.5 games. Seby Zavala (2012-14) played in eight games over the last two weeks and started in seven, mostly at catcher, for the Chicago White Sox. After singling on Aug. 21, Zavala took Tampa Bay's Luis Patiño deep in the third inning to put Chicago on the board. He also hit an RBI double in Chicago's 10-7 win over Toronto on Aug. 26. On the season, Zavala is batting .200 with a .261 on base percentage, five home runs, 15 runs and 15 RBIs. The White Sox lead Cleveland by 10 games in the AL Central. Alan Trejo (2015-17) started at second base on Wednesday for Colorado and pinch hit in the ninth inning on Sunday. This season, he is batting .217 with a .260 on base percentage, seven runs and three RBIs. Trejo was optioned back to Triple-A Albuquerque on Aug. 23..
On the PGA Tour, Xander Schauffele (2013-15) tied for 17th in The Northern Trust at 11-under-par, while Scott Piercy (1999-01) tied for 63rd at 4-under-par. Schauffele tied for 49th at 7-under-par in the BMW Championship. Next weekend, Schauffele, who is ranked fifth in the world and 17th in the FedEx Cup, will compete in the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
