SAN DIEGO – In its lone prep for the 2021 regular season, the San Diego State women's soccer team hosts the Arizona Wildcats in an exhibition match at 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday night on the SDSU Sports Deck.
San Diego State, which played for its conference-record 12th Mountain West title last season, returns 11 letterwinners and seven starters, including 2020 Mountain West Newcomer of the Year and first-team performer Anna Toohey. Laura Fuentes and Emma Gaines-Ramos were first-team honorees as well, and keeper Alexa Madueno earned second-team designation. Madueno and Toohey were also members of the conference's All-Newcomer Team.
In the regular-season series between the two programs, the Aztecs holds a 4-1 advantage, with the last meeting coming on a neutral field in 2015. San Diego State has won both matchups on its home field (4-0 in 1995 & 1-0 in 2011) and both meetings in Tucson, 3-0 in 1994 and 1-0 in 2007. The 2015 meeting, the last time the Aztecs and the Wildcats faced off, was in the 2015 Sun Devil Desert Classic in Tempe, Ariz., and Arizona earned a 1-0 decision.
The Aztecs are looking to snap a four-game slide in preseason exhibition matches. The last exhibition SDSU won was 1-0 decision against Long Beach State prior to the start of that 2015 regular-season.
The regular season kicks off next week with the first of two consecutive home matches. The season opener is against Army West Point (Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7:00 p.m.) followed by a match against Pepperdine (Sunday, Aug. 22 at 7:00 p.m.). Admission is free for all San Diego State women's soccer matches.
