COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State's Wyatt Hendrie (Palmdale, Calif.) earned his third Mountain West Player of the Week honor this season after playing a vital role in the Aztecs' three-game sweep at Air Force, May 22-23.
With his accolade, Hendrie gives SDSU nine conference weekly awards this year and joins Jaden Fein as the first set of teammates to receive MW weekly recognition on at least three occasions in the same season.
Hendrie was a leading contributor to the Aztecs' prolific offense that combined for 50 runs and 58 hits in their three victories over the Falcons this past weekend. The SDSU catcher hit .615 (8-13), with five doubles, seven RBIs and seven runs scored to go with a 3-for-3 effort in stolen base attempts.
In addition to leading the Aztecs in batting average, doubles and total bases (13), Hendrie shared the top spot on the team in hits, runs scored, stolen bases and slugging percentage (1.000). The redshirt sophomore also posted a 91.7 success rate in advancing runners for the series (11-12) and went 3-for-3 in RBI opportunities with a runner on third and less than two outs. Even his outs were productive, as he recorded a pair of sacrifice flies on the weekend.
In the series opener, Hendrie helped SDSU capture its fifth run-rule victory of the year by going 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. During the Aztecs' seven-run outburst in the second inning, he ripped an RBI single, stole a base and scored before touching home in SDSU's five-run surge in the seventh that helped end the game early, 17-3.
In game two, Hendrie went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs while drawing a pair of walks and swiping two bases, helping the Aztecs claim a 13-10 decision.
In Sunday's finale, Hendrie set a career-high with three doubles, finishing with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with three more RBIs while tying his collegiate best with four runs scored. The Palmdale, California, native drove in the SDSU's first run of the day with a double in the first inning, sparking the Aztecs to a big 20-13 win.
For the season, Hendrie has taken over the lead in the Mountain West with 54 RBI and finds himself among the conference top 10 in several statistical categories, including runs scored (3rd - 51), slugging percentage (7th - .624), on-base percentage (7th - 462), batting average (8th - .369), home runs (T-8th - 9), total bases (T-8th - 98) and hits (10th - 58).
On the national stage, Hendrie ranks 15th in the country in RBIs per game (1.29), 17th in runs scored (1.21), 29th in RBIs (54) and 48th in runs scored (51).
Hendrie, who earned MW Player of the Week honors earlier this season on March 22 and April 26, was also named one of 16 semifinalists for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award on May 20.
San Diego State closes out its regular-season campaign this weekend when it travels to New Mexico for a pivotal three-game series, May 28-29, that will help determine the Mountain West champion. The Aztecs (28-15, 20-13 MW) are currently in second place behind Nevada (21-18, 18-9 MW) in the conference standings.
