Smith Sits in Second Midway Through Heptathlon

CLOVIS, Calif. – After the first day of the Mountain West Outdoor Championships, Asia Smith sits in second place after four events of the heptathlon.

Sara Absten is in fifth place after recording personal bests in two events and Ruthie Grant-Williams is currently in ninth.

Asia Smith began the day by finishing second in the 100m hurdles with a personal best time of 13.99, beating her previous best of 14.06 that was set over two years ago. Absten came in sixth with a time of 14.51, just 0.01 seconds off her previous personal record.

In the high jump, Smith came in third with a season-best leap of 5-07.00 (1.70m).

Smith then took first in the shot put with a throw of 41-10.50 (12.76m). Absten had a new PR with a toss of 36-07.50 (11.16m).

Absten recorded another PR in the 200m dash after finishing in 24.73.

Carlene Masar ended the day with a 17th place finish in the 10,000m (38:52.28)

UP NEXT
Smith, Absten and Grant-Williams will wrap up the heptathlon tomorrow (Friday) morning beginning at 10:30 a.m. There will also be the finals for the hammer throw (3 p.m.), long jump (4 p.m.), pole vault (6 p.m.) and shot put (7 p.m.) in addition to the prelims for all track events where the top eight finishers will advance to Saturday's finals.
