STANFORD, Calif. -- The 47th-ranked San Diego State women's golf team slipped one spot to 11th place after two rounds of the NCAA Stanford Regional Tuesday on the par-71, 6,291-yard Stanford Golf Course. The Aztecs, who are the No. 12 seed in the 18-team field, collectively shot a 10-over-par 294 today and are at 17-over for the tournament.
No. 20 Stanford, which is competing on its home course for a third time this spring and for the second straight tournament, is in a commanding lead at 25-under 543 following a 13-under 271, more than 20 strokes ahead of the only other two teams under par in No. 14 Virginia Tech (-3) and No. 3 Wake Forest (-2). No. 6 Oklahoma State (+1) and No. 10 USC (+3) round out the top 5. SDSU is three strokes behind three teams in eighth place, including No. 29 Northwestern, No. 40 Denver and No. 50 Pepperdine which sit at +14. The top-six teams after the three-day event advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Sara Kjellker continues to lead San Diego State and is in a four-way tie for 11th at 1-under 141 after carding a 1-over 72 on Tuesday. Kjellker, who on Thursday was named the Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Year, had three birdies on the day, including the par-5, 477-yard 12th hole, par-4, 423-yard second and the par-5, 490-yard seventh against four bogeys. Starting on the 10th, she played her first nine at 2-over 38 before rallying for a 1-under 34 on her second nine.
Stanford has four players in the top six in Angelina Ye (T1, -7), Rachel Heck (T1, -7), Brooke Seay (T3, -6) and Sadie Englemann (T5, -5), while Oklahoma State's Maja Start (-6) and Northwestern's Irene Kim (-5) are tied for third and fifth, respectively. The three-lowest individuals not on the six qualifying teams will advance to Scottsdale, Ariz.
Bernice Ilas, meanwhile, matched her 2-over 73 yesterday with another 73 and is tied for 38th at 4-over 146. Ilas rebounded from a rough start that featured four bogeys over her first seven holes, going 2-under the rest of the way, including birdies on the par-5, 501-yard first, par-3, 150-yard fourth and the par-4, 355-yard ninth.
Andrea Gomez moved up 16 places into a tie for 52nd at 7-over 149 following a 1-over 72 today. Gomez recorded four birdies - par-4, 399-yard 13th, No. 1, par-3, 192-yard third and the par-3, 152-yard eighth - which offset five bogeys.
April Ranches is tied with Gomez for 52nd at +7 after a 6-over 77 on Tuesday. Ranches finished with one birdie (par-5, 503-yard 16th), but couldn't overcome a pair of bogeys, a double bogey on the 13th and a triple bogey on the par-4, 396-yard fifth.
Anna Lina Otten also started for the Aztecs but withdrew early in her back nine.
The final round of the NCAA Stanford Regional gets underway for SDSU at 8 a.m. PT Wednesday. San Diego State will tee off from the 10th hole with No. 29 Northwestern and New Mexico State.
