EDIT (as of 6:01 p.m. PT): Due to another team signing for an incorrect scorecard, SDSU has moved into solo 10th. Recap is updated below.

STANFORD, Calif.
-- The 47th-ranked San Diego State women's golf team sits in 10th place after the first day of the NCAA Stanford Regional Monday on the par-71, 6,291-yard Stanford Golf Course. The Aztecs, who earned the No. 12 seed in the 18-team field, shot a 7-over-par 291 in today's first round.

No. 20 Stanford, which is competing on its home course for a third time this spring, leads the regional at 12-under 272, 10 shots ahead of No. 14 Virginia Tech (-2) in second place. Eight other teams are within five shots of No. 3 Wake Forest (+2) in third place, including No. 6 Oklahoma State (+3), No. 10 USC (+4) No. 22 Arizona (+5), No. 40 Denver (+5), No. 27 Florida (+6), No. 29 Northwestern (+6), SDSU (+7) and New Mexico State (+*). The top-six teams after the three-day event advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

San Diego State's 291 came with a pair of counting triple bogeys on the par-4, 355-yard ninth hole, which moved the Aztecs from 1-over (effectively third place) to 7-over (a tie for 10th).

Individually, Sara Kjellker is in a tie for seventh out of 95 competitors after catching five over her final five holes en route to a 2-under 69. Starting on the 10th hole, the Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Year was 2-over through her first 13 holes with a lone birdie on the par-5, 503-yard 16th hole. Kjellker then ripped off four consecutive birdies, including the par-4, 396-yard fifth, the par-4, 390-yard sixth, par-5, 490-yard seventh and the par-3, 152-yard eighth to get to 2-under. A par on No. 18 finished her round.

Kjellker is just two strokes behind leaders Sadie Englemann (Stanford), Irene Kim (Northwestern) and Maja Stark (Oklahoma State), who each shot a 4-under 67. Three others - Stanford's Rachel Heck and Brooke Seay, and Virginia Tech's Alyssa Montgomery - are tied for fourth at -3. The three-lowest individuals not on the six qualifying teams will advance to Scottsdale, Ariz.

April Ranches and Bernice Ilas, meanwhile, are tied for 26th and tied for 36th, respectively, after Monday's first round. Ranches signed for a 1-over 72, posting two birdies - par-5, 477-yard 12th and par-4, 423-yard second - three bogeys and a team-high 13 pars.

Ilas is one stroke back of Ranches at 2-over 73. Ilas overcame a double bogey on No. 12 and a bogey on the par-4, 399-yard 13th, with a birdie on the par-3, 167-yard 17th, an eagle on the par-5, 501-yard first and a birdie on No. 7 to get to red numbers at 1-under. Following a par on the eighth hole, however, Ranches recorded a triple bogey on the ninth to settle for a 73.

Andrea Gomez shot a 6-over 77 and is tied for 69th. Gomez managed only one birdie on the first, and had four bogeys and a triple bogey on the ninth.

Anna Lina Otten also competed and is tied for 87th following a 9-over 80. Otten's scorecard saw only four pars, and also three birdies - par-4, 359-yard 11th, No. 12 and No. 7 - 10 bogeys and a double bogey.

SDSU will play the second round Tuesday with New Mexico State and Iowa State, beginning at 8 a.m. PT on the 10th hole.
