Maggie Balint Named MW Pitcher of the WeekMaggie Balint Named MW Pitcher of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State softball's Maggie Balint has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It is the second career MW accolade for the junior (also April 13) and third pitcher-of-the-week award by an Aztec this season (also Karina Faasisila on Feb. 23).

Balint led SDSU to a sweep over New Mexico last weekend, going 2-0 with a save and a 0.00 ERA in 16 innings. The right-hander struck out 14 with just three walks allowed. Balint held the Lobos to a .167 average and only two UNM baserunners reached third base.

In Saturday's opener of a doubleheader, Balint tossed a five-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in a 3-0 San Diego State victory. All five hits were singles against Balint, who also gave up two walks and a hit batter. Entering in the sixth inning of a 5-4 game in the nightcap, Balint allowed two hits over two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the save in an 11-4 Aztec win. Balint finished her weekend in style on Sunday, tossing a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 SDSU triumph. She also gave up a walk over the complete game, while striking out five.

On the season, Balint is 15-6 with a 2.08 ERA in 141 2/3 innings. She has 13 complete games, seven solo shutouts, one combined shutout and has struck out 126 batters, while limiting the opposition to a .206 average.

San Diego State travels to Fort Collins, Colo., this weekend for a series at Colorado State. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at noon MT, and a solo game Sunday at noon MT.
