COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State's Johannes Seeman (Pärnu, Estonia) was named Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced Wednesday by the conference office.
With his award, the Aztec redshirt freshman garnered the first weekly conference accolade of his career and SDSU's first this season.
On Saturday, April 24, Seeman supplied the clinching point at No. 1 singles in the Aztecs' 4-3 come-from-behind victory over UNLV in their final Mountain West dual match of the 2021 campaign.
With SDSU facing an earlier 3-1 deficit on the team scoreboard, Seeman provided the Scarlet and Black with the third of consecutive singles wins, securing the match with a thrilling three-set triumph (7-6(7), 2-6, 6-3) over the Rebels' Alex Kobelt, who was the reigning MW Player of the Week.
With Seeman's victory, the Aztecs denied UNLV a share of first place in the final Mountain West standings, as SDSU registered its fifth straight triumph over the Rebels and its 12th in the last 13 meetings between the two schools.
In addition, Seeman snapped a personal seven-match winless streak (five losses, two unfinished decisions) with his team-leading eighth victory of the spring.
Last month, Seeman defeated then-No. 83 Clement Chidekh of Washington in a home dual match, earning a spot in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings for two straight weeks at No. 123 in the poll released March 30.
A native of Pärnu, Estonia, Seeman is also tied for second on the team with eight victories in doubles competition, including a 7-4 mark at the No. 1 spot playing alongside Victor Castro.
Seeman and the Aztecs are back on the courts this afternoon, tackling UC Santa Barbara in their final home match of the season. SDSU closes out its 2021 campaign on Saturday, May 1, when it makes the short drive across town to battle the University of San Diego at 12:30 p.m.
