SAN DIEGO – San Diego State, which tied for the Mountain West's top goal scoring team, had six players named to the All-MW first and second teams, two to the all-newcomer team and the player and newcomer of the year, the league announced today. This is the fourth time in the Mountain West era that SDSU has garnered multiple "of the Year" honors (also in 2009, 2007 & 2012), and the six honorees are the most for the program since nine members of the 2015 team were selected to receive all-league recognition.
Senior midfielder Chloe Frisch is the league's Offensive Player of the Year as well as a first-team performer. Junior striker Anna Toohey is the Newcomer of the Year, a first-team honoree and is included on the All-Newcomer team. Senior defender Sarah Broacha, junior midfielder Laura Fuentes and freshman striker Emma Gaines-Ramos were also members of the first team. Freshman keeper Alexa Madueno received second-team recognition and is also included on the All-Newcomer team.
Frisch has simply been the most dominant offensive force in the Mountain West this year. The Solana Beach, Calif., native, led the Mountain West in shots (41), shots per game (4.10), shots on goal (21) and shots on goal per game (2.10), and her six goals were tied for second most in the league. She had two game winners, in the 1-0 victory at Boise State on the day SDSU won the West Division race and the team's 6-1 win at San Jose State, and totaled 13 points (No. 4 in the MW). Her first team All-MW honor is the second of her career and the second in as many seasons. Frisch is the third Aztec in the last 12 years to earn Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, joining Cat Walker (2009) and Megan Jurado (2012). San Diego State's three offensive player of the year awards are the most by any team currently in the league.
Toohey, a transfer from North Carolina State, tied for third in shots (27) and tied for sixth in shots per game (2.70) in the Mountain West. Her 17 shots on goal and 1.70 per game were second only to Frisch in the league. Toohey scored five goals which was second among the Aztecs and tied for fourth in the conference. From March 20, vs. UNLV, to April 3, at UNLV, Toohey scored a goal in four straight games, and three of those strikes were the game winner. She totaled a team and league high five assists and ranked second in the league, and led San Diego State with 15 points. Toohey joins current teammate Laure Fuentes as the second Aztec to earn the Newcomer of the Year honor since the Mountain West established the award in 2016.
Broacha, a center defender, controlled the action in front of the goal and anchored the back line, earned a starting assignment in each of the team's 10 contests and among field players ranked second on the team in minutes (830). The Pleasanton, Calif., product, produced three shots on the season and put one on frame. The reigning Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, this is Broacha's first first-team All-Mountain West honor after garnering second-team accolades following the completion of last season.
Fuentes, as previously mentioned, was named the conference's 2018 Newcomer of the Year and last year received her second second-team All-Mountain West nod, finishing this season No. 2 on the team in assists (4), which was tied for second in the conference. A starter in all 10 contests, she led the team's field players with 873 minutes, scored two goals and her four assists are a single season best. The Newark, Calif., native, produced 11 shots, put four on frame and among her two goals, she had the game winner, on a penalty kick, in a 3-1 victory over Boise State.
Gaines-Ramos, in her first season as an Aztec, started in all 10 games and played 508 minutes. Her three assists were tied for sixth most in the league, were the most for any freshman in the Mountain West, and ranked No. 3 among the Aztecs. Her 17 shots and eight shots on goal were the third best on the squad. This is the first All-Mountain West honor for Gaines-Ramos.
Madueno played every minute in goal for the Aztecs this year, a total of 909:35 minutes. She finished with an 8-2-0 record and had three clean sheets. Facing a total of 101 shots, she stopped 30 of the 41 that reached her line, a save percentage of 0.732, and had a goals against average of 1.09. A product of Pioneer High in Woodland, Calif., she surrendered one or fewer goals in seven games, gave up two goals twice and allowed three goals just once. Madueno is the first true freshman keeper to start every game in a season for SDSU since Aubree Southwick in 2007, and she is the third player, and only true freshman, to play every minute in a season since Stephanie Pearson in 2003. The only other keeper to start and play every minute in a season for San Diego State since 2003 was Brooke Lisowski in 2019.
The Aztecs continue to prepare for Saturday's Mountain West title match at New Mexico. The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
