SAN DIEGO – The Aztec rowing team will compete against UC San Diego Friday morning at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center beginning at 8 a.m.
The first varsity eight will race at 8 a.m. followed by the first varsity four at 8:20 a.m. The schools will be competing for the Patty Wyatt Perpetual Trophy. The forecast calls for clouds with temperatures in the high 50's and a mild Northwest win. No spectators will be permitted to attend the races.
This is the Tritons' first official race of the season. They scrimmaged against Loyola Marymount last weekend on Mission Bay. The Aztecs have had two races so far, competing at No. 16 USC and in the San Diego Crew Classic where they raced head-to-head with San Diego.
This is the Tritons first season in Division I and they compete in the CAA. Both head coach Colin Truex and associate head coach Kimberly Dale have SDSU ties. Truex is a former Aztec assistant and recruiting coordinator and helped SDSU to back-to-back first place finishes at the WIRA Championships. Dale rowed for SDSU from 2005-07 and helped the Aztecs second varsity eight win the gold medal at the WIRA Championship Regatta in 2007 and then served as a volunteer assistant at SDSU for a season.
The remainder of SDSU's regular season races will be local, either at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center or on Mission Bay. The Aztecs will compete in the AAC Championship May 16 on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
