M. Golf Moves into Seventh at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The San Diego State men's golf team carded the fourth-lowest second round Tuesday to move up three places to seventh on the second day of the 74th annual Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf. The Aztecs shot a 5-over-par 355 and are at 22-over 722 at the historic par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club.

Only No. 7 Pepperdine (2-over 702), No. 43 Washington (+8), Brigham Young (+11), No. 37 Stanford (+11), California (+13) and Oregon (+18) are ahead of No. 23 SDSU (+22). USC (+35), tournament host San José State (+38) and Colorado State (+41) round out the top 10.

Individually, Puwit Anupansuebsai moved up one place and is in a four-way tie for fifth place at 1-under 139 following an even-par-70 on Tuesday. One of only eight golfers under-par in the 90-player field through two rounds, Anupansuebsai had four birdies - par-4, 493-yard second hole, par-3, 177-yard eighth, par-5, 527-yard 13th and par-3, 181-yard 18th - and four bogeys today. Through 36 holes, Anupansuebsai ranks in a tie for third in the field in par-3 scoring (3.00) and tied for sixth in par-5 scoring (4.33).

Brigham Young's Carson Lundell leads the tournament at 6-under 134, while Stanford's Karl Vilips, and Pepperdine's RJ Manke and Joe Highsmith are each one shot ahead of Anupansuebsai at 2-under 138.

Zihao Jin, meanwhile, carded an even-par 70 on a day where the average score was 74.09. It was tied for the seventh-best score in the second round and moved him up 28 spots into a tie for 37th at 6-over 146. After starting 3-over through his first seven holes with a lone birdie on the par-5, 565-yard sixth hole, Jin birdied the par-5, 502-yard ninth to get to 2-over for his first nine. Jin bogeyed the par-4, 440-yard 10th, but it would be his last of the second round as he went 3-under par over his final eight holes, including birdies on No. 13, the par-3, 141-yard 15th and No. 18 to get back to even-par for the day. His 4.17 scoring average on par 5s is tied for third in the field after two rounds.

Steve Sugimoto and Callum Bruce are tied for 44th at 7-over 147. Sugimoto shot a 2-over 72 with two birdies (No. 9 and No. 13) and four bogeys. A day after a 1-over 71, Bruce settled for a 6-over 76 today. Bruce started out 6-over through his first six holes, but responded with birdies on No. 9, No. 10 and the par-4, 373-yard 12th. Bruce, however, ended his round with three straight bogeys and had to sign for a 76.

Joey Moore tied Jin for San Diego State's lowest round of the day and seventh-lowest overall today at even-par 70, moving up 25 places into a tie for 51st at 8-over 148. The highlight of the day, certainly for the Aztecs, but most likely for the whole tournament, came on the par-5, 502-yard ninth hole. After a mammoth 333-yard drive, Moore holed out an iron from 169 yards to card a rare albatross (-3). Moore also had three birdies, including the par-3, 217-yard third, par-4, 378-yard fourth and No. 13, offsetting four bogeys and a double bogey.

Youssef Guezzale was three shots better today, shooting a 3-over 73. After two rounds, he's tied for 56th at 9-over 149. Guezzale had three birdies - No. 9, No. 12 and No. 13 - along with four bogeys and a double bogey.
