SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Puwit Anupansuebsai fired a 1-under 69 and is tied for sixth to lead the San Diego State men's golf team on the first day of the 74th annual Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf Monday on the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club.
In a day that saw the average score at 73.71, Anupansuebsai was one of only 11 players to shoot under-par in the 90-player field. Following a bogey on the par-3, 194-yard fifth hole, Anupansuebsai responded with birdies on the par-5, 565-yard sixth and par-5, 502-yard ninth to get to 1-under for his first nine. After a bogey on the par-4, 440-yard 10th, he birdied the par-5, 527-yard 13th and had seven pars the rest of the way for his team-leading fifth round of the season in the 60s. Anupansuebsai was one of only four players to birdie (or better) all three par 5s in the first round.
California's Finigan Tilly and Hawai'i's Justin Ngan are tied for the individual lead at 3-under 67, while Brigham Young's Carson Lundell, San José State's Carl Corpus and Pepperdine's RJ Manke are one stroke ahead of Anupansuebsai at 2-under.
Callum Bruce, meanwhile, carded a 1-over 71 and is tied for 18th. Bruce got to 1-under three times in the round, but bogeyed both the par-4, 363-yard 17th and the par-3, 181-yard 18th to settle for the 71. Bruce's three birdies in the round came on the par-4, 493-yard second, No. 5 and No. 13.
Steve Sugimoto is tied for 56th at 5-over 75. Sugimoto was unable to record a birdie on the day, finishing with 14 pars, three bogeys and a double bogey on the par-3, 141-yard 15th.
Youssef Guezzale and Zihao Jin are among 10 golfers tied for 65th at 6-over 76. Guezzale's roller coaster of a round featured two birdies - No. 9 and No. 13 - two bogeys, three double bogeys and 11 pars. Jin, meanwhile, couldn't overcome two triple bogeys - par-4, 505-yard first and par-4, 391-yard 11th - despite posting three birdies on the front nine, including No. 2, No. 6 and No. 9. He also had three bogeys.
Joey Moore had an 8-over 78 and is tied for 76th. Moore was the lone Aztec to birdie the par-4, 378-yard fourth hole, but had nine bogeys on the day.
SDSU is 10th out of 13 teams at 17-over 367, just six strokes out of the top 5. Washington leads after an even-par 350, while California (+3), Pepperdine (+4), Stanford (+8), Brigham Young (+11) and host San José State (+11) round out the top 6.
The second round of the Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf gets underway for San Diego State at 10:54 a.m. PT Tuesday.
