Aztecs Drop Match with Toreros

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's tennis team dropped their first match of the 2021 season Sunday with a loss to the University of San Diego (RV), falling victim to a sweep by the Toreros.

The doubles point was easily won by USD with wins on court one and three in a convincing fashion. The duo of Colling/Goldsmith topped senior Tamara Arnold and junior Alicia Melosch 6-4 on court one while the team of McBride/Desiantnikov bested senior Abbie Mulbarger and freshman Alexandria von Tersch Pohrer 6-2 on court three. The Aztecs won their lone battle of the day on court two as senior Nnena Nadozie and junior Regina Pitts earned a victory over Kukaras/Kalaitzis 6-4, but the Toreros had secured the doubles point with wins first on the two other courts.

In singles play, Arnold fell on court one to ITA's No. 61 singles player Solymar Colling 6-3,6-1 while Pitts suffered a 6-2, 6-4 setback on court two to ITA No. 124 Elizabeth Goldsmith. Jordyn McBride earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nadozie on court three while Kati Kukaras bested Melosh on court five by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Junior Agustina Rimoldi Godoy fell to Jessi Muljat on court six in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Cécile Morin was the only Aztec to go to three sets in singles play, coming back from a 6-1 first set loss to win the second set 6-4. Her opponent Abigal Desiantnikov was able to take home the victory on court four with a 6-3 set-three win. 

THE STAT
In the young 2021 season, Morin's two singles matches have both gone to three sets. She topped UC Irvine's Alyssuia Fossorier 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and fell to Desiantnikov today 1-6, 6-4, 3-6. 

UP NEXT
The Aztecs no time to stay down as SDSU has two dual matches this week, welcoming both UC Riverside Tuesday, March 9 and Gonzaga University Thursday, March 11. Both matches are set to begin at 2 p.m. at Aztec Tennis Center. At this time, no fans will be permitted to attend SDSU home matches at Aztec Tennis Center due to COVID-19 protocols.
