SOMIS, Calif. -- The San Diego State women's golf team moved up one place following a 32-over-par 320 in the second round at the Bruin Wave Invitational Tuesday at the Saticoy Country Club.
The Aztecs, who came into the tournament ranked 35th in the latest Golfstat ratings, are now in solo possession of 11th place at 70-over 646 on the par-72, 6,273-yard course layout. SDSU was tied with Cal Poly, Colorado State and Long Beach State for 12th in the 15-team tournament after yesterday's +38, but now are just seven strokes out of the top 10 (Washington, +63) and nine behind eighth-place Nebraska (+61).
No. 10 Arizona State leads at +34, while No. 31 Oregon (+39), New Mexico (+40), No. 17 Northwestern (+45) and No. 37 UCLA (+48) round out the top 5.
Sara Kjellker paces San Diego State after two rounds at 13-over 157 following a 5-over 77 on Tuesday. The two-time first-team All-Mountain West pick didn't have a birdie in the second round but offset five bogeys with 13 pars to move up 11 places into a tie for 17th.
Bernice Olivarez Ilas followed up her 78 on Monday with an 8-over 80 today and sits in a tie for 21st at +14 (158). Starting on the 10th hole, Ilas overcame a double bogey on the par-4, 370-yard 11th and a bogey on the par-3, 160-yard 13th by birdieing both the par-5, 510-yard 14th and the par-4, 415-yard 17th. Ilas, however, went 7-over the rest of the way (10 holes) en route to signing for an 80.
The biggest jump of the day belonged to freshman Anna Lina Otten. Otten, who shot a 17-over 89 in the first round on Monday and was in a tie for 74th out of 82 golfers, fired a 4-over 76 in the second round today when the rest of the field averaged 80.66 and now sits in a tie for 52nd at +21 (180). Otten recorded four birdies on the day, including two par 3s on the front nine (the Aztecs started on the 10th) (138-yard 10th and the 160-yard 13th) and two par 5s on the back nine (465-yard sixth and the 495-yard eighth). She also had five bogeys and a crucial triple bogey on the par-4, 385-yard third hole, before rebounding with the aforementioned birdies on the par 5s.
Andrea Gomez, also a freshman, dropped from a tie for 21st to a tie for 57th following a 15-over 87 on Tuesday. Her two-round score is 22-over 166.
Competing as an individual, April Ranches was two shots better in the second round with an 89 (+17) and is 80th overall after two days at +36 (180). Although Ranches didn't record a birdie, she did eagle the par-4, 310-yard 16th hole. She was one of four to eagle a hole on Tuesday and one of seven for the tournament.
Ella Adams, who carded a 94 (+22) on Monday, withdrew from the tournament today.
The Bruin Wave Invitational wraps up Wednesday with the final round, as San Diego State tees off from the 10th hole at 9:17 a.m. PT with Washington and Cal State Fullerton.
