SAN DIEGO – San Diego State sharpshooter Jordan Schakel, whose 46.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc was the third best in the nation at the end of the regular season, will participate in the State Farm College 3-Point Championship Thursday night, April 1, from Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.
The event, in combination with the College Slam Dunk Championship, is scheduled to air on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. PT.
Schakel, whose 225 career 3-pointers are the third most in Aztec history, was honored as second-team All-Mountain West performer in separate polls of both the league's coaches and the media who regularly cover the conference, as well as being recognized as a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) second-team All-District 17performer. He was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2021 Mountain West Championship, and was twice a Mountain West Player of the Week designee this season.
During the regular season, the Torrance, Calif., native, led the Mountain West in three-point percentage, three-point field goals per game (2.89) and total three pointers made (78), and was the No. 15 scorer in the league. Schakel averaged 14.3 points (47.9 percent from the floor, 46.7 percent from long range, and 90.8 percent from the line), 4.4 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.0 assists in the 2020-21 season. His three-point field goal percentage this year is the highest for a senior season in Mountain West history.
Nationally, in addition to his No. 3 ranked 3-point shooting percentage, his 78 treys ranked No. 14, and his 2.89 threes per game ranked No. 22. Schakel sank eight threes against Colorado State (Jan. 4) which are the most in a game by any Mountain West player this year and a career high. He hit a three in every game (28) this past season, recorded multiple 3-pointers in 20 games and in those contests SDSU was 17-3.
Schakel made three or more treys in 16 games, four or more in ten games and five or more in five games, and is the fifth player in program history to reach and pass 200-career three pointers. Schakel scored in double figures in 21 games (SDSU was 18-3 in those contests), and in 15 games scored 15-or-more points (SDSU was 14-1 in those games). During the season he became the 35th player in program history to reach 1,000 points for his career.
Twenty four of the nation's elite men's and women's college basketball players will compete in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships (eight dunkers, along with eight men's and eight women's shooters). The program showcases the dunking and sharp-shooting talents of the nation's top college basketball players.
