Women’s Golf Tied for Sixth at The Bruzzy

ARGYLE, Texas -- Sara Kjellker sits in a tie for third place to lead the San Diego State women's golf team Sunday at The Bruzzy. Playing 36 holes on the first day of the two-day, three-round tournament, Kjellker is at 3-under-par 141 on the par-72, 6,421-yard Lantana Golf Club.
 
Kjellker opened with a 2-under 70 and followed with a 1-under 71, and is tied with Oklahoma State's Maddison Hinson-Tolchard and Missouri's Jess Yuen for third out of 80 competitors. The trio trails Oklahoma State's Lianna Baliey (-9) and North Texas' Lauren Cox (-7) heading into tomorrow's final round.
 
As a team, the Aztecs are tied for sixth with TCU at 6-over 582, carding an even-par 288 and a 6-over 294. No. 7 Oklahoma State leads the 15-team field at -19, while No. 38 North Texas (-5), No. 33 Oklahoma (-1), No. 30 Texas Tech (+1) and No. 17 Houston (+3) round out the top 5.
 
Kjellker recorded three birdies and three bogeys in her first round, but the hole of the day came on the par-4, 391-yard fifth where she recorded an eagle. In the second round, Kjellker totaled five birdies and four bogeys. After two rounds, she is tied for third with a 4.38 scoring average on the par 5s.
 
April Ranches, meanwhile, is tied for 19th at 1-over 145 after rounds of 2-over 74 and 1-under 71, the latter which tied a colligate low. In the first round, Ranches, who started out on the par-4, 392-yard 17th hole with a birdie, was a 2-under through her first five holes but had two bogeys and a double bogey the rest of the way to settle for the 74. In the second round, she started out with a double bogey on No. 17, but then recorded three birdies and 14 pars the rest of the way for a 71, moving her up 17 places.
 
Bernice Olivarez Ilas and Andrea Gomez are each tied for 43rd at 5-over 149. Ilas fired rounds of 73 and 76, while Gomez opened with a collegiate career-low 71 and followed with a 78. Ilas had four birdies and five bogeys in the first 18 and four birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys in the second round. Gomez birdied three holes with two bogeys in the first round, but only had one birdie in the second round - par-3, 137-yard 15th - and seven bogeys.
 
Anna Lina Otten also completed her two rounds and is 76th at 13-over 157 following an 81 and 76.
 
SDSU begins the final round Monday at 8:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.
