SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's tennis team welcomes three Mountain West opponents to The Mesa this weekend to open conference play. The Aztecs take on the Fresno State Bulldogs Saturday, March 27 at noon, and the Nevada Wolf Pack Sunday, March 28 at noon.
For the safety of Mountain West programs, the conference has changed how conference opponents will play throughout the 2021 spring season. Instead of traditional one-off duals with MW foes, multiple conference opponents will travel to one conference institution site and play two matches. Each program will play one neutral site and one true away match when on the road, or two home matches when the program is the host of the pod.
To follow with the pod-type play model, Nevada will take on UNLV on Saturday at noon and Fresno State will play UNLV Sunday at noon. SDSU and UNLV will meet later in the season in Las Vegas.
This will be the Scarlet and Black's first taste of conference action since the end of the 2018-19 season, as the 2019-20 season was canceled due to the coronavirus before the Aztecs could begin league play. The Aztecs went 3-1 in MW regular-season action in '18-'19 and concluded the season falling to UNLV in the championship match of the conference championship tournament, 0-4.
San Diego State sits at 2-2 on the season with wins over UC Riverside and UC Irvine and losses to the University of San Diego and the University of Oregon.
At this time, fans will not be permitted to attend SDSU home matches at Aztec Tennis Center due to COVID-19 protocols.
