SOMIS, Calif. -- The San Diego State women's golf team is in a four-way tie for 12th place after a windy first day at the Bruin Wave Invitational Monday on the par-72, 6,273-yard Saticoy Country Club course.

The Aztecs, who came into the tournament ranked 35th in the latest Golfstat ratings, shot a 38-over-par 326 in the first round, tied with Cal Poly, Colorado State and Long Beach State. Even at +38, SDSU is still only nine shots out of the top 6 after a tough first round that featured an average score of 81.43 for the 81 golfers, thanks in part to consistent 20 mph winds.

No. 31 Oregon leads the 15-team tournament at 18-over 306, while No. 10 Arizona State (+21), New Mexico (+21), No. 37 UCLA (+25) and No. 17 Northwestern (+27) round out the top 5. San Diego State (+38) is one shot behind Washington (+37) and four behind Oregon State (+34) for the top 10.

Bernice Olivarez Ilas navigated the wind the best for the Aztecs, firing a 6-over 78 and is tied for 16th after 18 holes. After getting off to a rocky start with two double bogeys and one bogey to sit at 5-over through seven holes, Illas went 1-over the final 11 holes, including a birdie on the par-5, 510-yard 14th hole.

Teammates Andrea Gomez and Sara Kjellker are one and two shots back of Ilas, respectively. Competing in her second career collegiate event, Gomez carded a 7-over 79. Gomez made the turn at 1-over 37 thanks in part to a birdie on the par-5, 495-yard eighth hole. The back nine wasn't as kind for Gomez, however, as she recorded six bogeys for a 42, including four straight to end her round.

Kjellker, meanwhile, shot an 8-over 80. Kjellker's roller coaster of a round featured two birdies (No. 8 and the par-3, 160-yard 13th), five bogeys, one double bogey and a triple bogey. After starting out 9-over through her first 12 holes, the two-time first-team All-Mountain West pick bounced back with the aforementioned birdie on the 13th and five consecutive pars to finish.

Playing in SDSU's starting five for the first time of her career, Anna Lina Otten finished at 17-over 89 for the first round. A freshman, Otten did end her first day on a high note with a birdie on the par-5, 525-yard 18th hole.

Competing as an individual, April Ranches shot a 91 (+19) and is tied for 79th, while Ella Adams carded a 94 (+22) and sits in 81st.

The Bruin Wave Invitational continues Tuesday with the second round, as San Diego State tees off from the 10th hole at 8 a.m. PT with Cal Poly and Long Beach State.
