GREENSBORO, N.C. – San Diego State senior swimmer Klara Thormalm and junior diver Ximena Lechuga Gonzalez completed their second day of competition at the 2021 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The day's action was highlighted by Thormalm's efforts in the 100 breaststroke, as she finished 11th overall and third in the consolation finals race with a time of 58.68 seconds.Her swim marked a school record and MW conference record, both which she previously held.
With her result, SDSU netted six points on the team scoreboard, ending the day in a tie with Houston for 30th place behind Arkansas (25th – 21 pts.) Arizona (26th – 17.5 pts.), Georgia Tech (27th – 16 pts.), Purdue (28th – 13 pts.) and LSU (29th – 9 pts).
Earlier in the preliminary heat of the 100 breast, Thormalm touched the wall at 59.16, just .02 seconds off her seed time. Her swim earned her a 16th-place finish, securing a spot in the consolation finals.
In addition, Lechuga Gonzalez had a fantastic outing on the 3-meter springboard, placing 19th in the nation with a preliminary score of 302.35. Her national top-20 finish is the best for a Mountain West diver since the 2018 championships.
The Aztec duo competes once more on Saturday at the championship event. Thormalm is set to race in the 200 breast prelims, starting at 10 a.m. ET, while Lechuga Gonzalez is schedule to participate in the platform dive, beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET.
