Stockton, Calif. – Spencer Samuel and Samantha Loughlin each scored a hat trick, but their offense was not enough to overcome 11 goals from the University of the Pacific Tigers and San Diego State water polo lost 11-10 on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to the six goals from Samuel and Loughlin, Karli Canale picked up two goals and Emily Bennett and Lucia Carballo had a goal apiece. Bennett also led the team with three assists, Laurene Padilla had two assists and Samuel and Canale picked up one assists each.
Loughlin opened the scoring with a goal in the second minute of the first period, but for the next eight minutes the Tigers scored three unanswered tallies to lead 3-1. The scoring went back and forth for nearly 16 minutes before Canale scored her two goals to tie the game 6-6 with 1:19 to play in the third.
UOP then went on its second three goal surge of the game to lead 9-6, with just over six minutes to play in regulation. Samuels scored to make it 9-7 with 4:54 to go and then scored again at the 1:42 mark to again bring the Aztecs to within two goals at 10-8.
The Tigers scored with 48 seconds to go in what would turn out to be the game winner to make it 11-8. Bennett's lone tally of the contest was produced in the final minute of the game and Loughlin tacked on one more to get the Aztecs to the final margin of 11-10.
Raquel de Pinho (1-2) had 17 shots to reach the goal line and stopped six Tigers shots.
San Diego State wraps up its northern California road trip on Sunday at No.3 Stanford. The game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. PT.
