SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State football has added 12-year NFL veteran Mike Goff to the coaching staff, head coach Brady Hoke announced Monday. Goff, who also has nine years of coaching experience, will coach the Aztec offensive line after serving as a volunteer assistant with SDSU in 2010-11.
In the NFL, Goff played for Cincinnati (1998-03), San Diego (2004-08) and Kansas City (2009), earning All-Pro honors in 2005 while with the Chargers. For his career, Goff started 154 games and appeared in 171 after being drafted in the third round of the 1998 NFL Draft following a four-year career at Iowa.
Most recently, Goff spent the past two seasons coaching the offensive line at Western Kentucky.
"It is great to have Mike join our coaching staff and once again reunite him with Aztec Nation," Hoke said. "I met Mike in 2009 and he volunteered for us in 2010. He was an elite offensive lineman at Iowa and in his 12-year career in the NFL. He will help the offensive linemen in our program and will maximize their abilities in the future. Mike knows our culture at San Diego State and, coupled with his knowledge and experience, makes him a great fit."
WKU played in a bowl game in each of his two seasons (2019-20). Last year, Pro Football Focus ranked the Hilltoppers 14th in the FBS as an offensive line unit (prior to bowl season), while ranking second in pass blocking and 17th in run blocking. Under Goff, Jordan Meredith was named a second-team All-C-USA pick and named a second-team PFF All-American.
In his first season in 2019, Goff's offensive line ranked 20th by PFF, including the top pass-blocking grade. According to PFF, Western Kentucky surrendered a pressure on only 12.7 percent of their pass-blocked snaps, which was the eighth-lowest percentage in the nation. Miles Pate earned first-team All-C-USA accolades, Meredith garnered honorable mention recognition and Gunner Britton made the C-USA All-Freshman Team. Meredith also was named a PFF Honorable Mention All-American.
Before his time with the Hilltoppers, Goff spent four years on the USC staff from 2015-18 where he assisted with the offensive line. While assisting with the line with the Trojans, two tackles were first-team All-Americans and first-team all-Pac-12 picks. Additionally, the USC offensive line was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award, given out to the top offensive line in the country.
Goff served as a volunteer assistant coach at San Diego State in 2010-11, helping the Aztecs to a pair of bowl games for the first time since 1998. He also was an assistant coach at nearby Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, Calif., in 2014.
Goff, who earned a bachelor's degree in liberal studies at Iowa in 2012, played under legendary Hawkeye head coach Hayden Fry. Goff's teams went to three bowl games, including each of his final two seasons as a starter. He played in 47 games over his career with 24 starts, including all 12 at right guard a senior for the eighth-ranked rushing attack.
Goff and his wife, Jessica, have a daughter, Harper.
