Aztec Storylines

  • The San Diego State lacrosse team travels up the California coast to take on the California Golden Bears in Berkeley, Calif., Sunday, Feb. 28. 
     
  • Opening draw for Saturday's matchup is set for 11 a.m. PT. Live stats and streams will be available for the match and linked on GoAztecs.com.
     
  • San Diego State lacrosse redshirt-senior Katy Sharretts was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Player of the Week, the conference offices announced Monday evening. Sharretts earned the defensive player of the week nod for the period ending Feb. 21, marking the second consecutive week the award has gone to an Aztec. The netminder was a strong force in the Aztecs' two games against Pac-12 foes over the weekend. In the game against Oregon Friday, Feb. 19, Sharretts grabbed a season-high five ground balls and forced a turnover to add to her 13 saves and .591 save percentage. Against Arizona State Sunday, Feb. 21, Sharretts saved nine shots from finding the back of the net and added a ground ball.
     
  • The San Diego State lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2021 season with an 11-9 nighttime victory over the University of Oregon Ducks Friday, Feb. 19 at Aztec Lacrosse Field. The Aztecs' scoring attack was led by senior captain Bailey Brown whose stat line includes three goals on five shots and four draw controls. Junior Cailin Young, senior Emily Resnick, and senior Lexi Tan each added two points to SDSU's total. Resnick's impressive performance throughout the night include an assist, four ground balls, five draw controls, and a caused turnover. Sophomore Camdyn O'Donnell added a score and three assists for four total points while adding two ground balls to her stat line. Young and junior Shelby Hook drove the Aztecs' defensive play as the duo each caused two turnovers. Young added two draw controls to her stat line while Hook also accumulated three ground balls throughout the evening.
     
  • Two days later, the Aztecs fell to Pac-12 foe Arizona State 23-10 in Tempe, Ariz. Freshman Avonna Usher and redshirt-senior Lexi Tan each led the Aztecs' scoring with two goals apiece while six other Aztecs each added a score to the board including seniors Julia Sheehan, Taylor Sullivan, Bailey Brown, and Emily Resnick, junior Cailin Young, and sophomore Camdyn O'Donnell. Tan's stat line included two ground balls and three caused turnovers, a category in which she led the team throughout the game. Resnick assisted on two of the Aztecs' goals while snagging two ground balls, grabbing two draw controls, and forcing a turnover. O'Donnell recorded a team-high four ground balls while Tan led the way in caused turnovers.
     
  • Sophomore Camdyn O'Donnell not only leads the Aztecs' roster in assists throughout 2021, but heads the MPSF in goal aids so far this season. Redshirt-senior Lexi Tan is at the top of the MPSF's laurels for caused turnovers (5) while Sharretts leads the league with nine ground balls and save percentage/gmae (.400) (through games of Feb. 21, 2021).
     
  • In conference team statistics (through games of Feb. 21, 2021), the Aztecs lead the conference in ground balls and ground balls per game (59 total, 19.67/game), saves and saves per game (35 total, 11.67/game) as well as caused turnovers and caused turnovers by game (23 total, 7.67/game). 
     
  • Head Coach Kylee White has scheduled a challenging slate for the Aztecs throughout 2021, including matchups with five Pac-12 programs and a trip to Denver, Colo. to take on the No. 11-ranked University of Denver program (IWLCA poll, Feb. 1, 2021).  
     
  • The Scarlet and Black look to defend their 2019 MPSF title as the two-time consecutive champions (2018, 2019) are scheduled to host both MPSF-foes UC Davis and Fresno State at home this season. The Aztecs will also visit the Aggies on the road in April before meeting both teams at the MPSF Championships from April 29-May 2 in Fresno, Calif.  
     
  • Rounding out the Aztecs' impressive scheduling is Coastal Carolina, as SDSU hosts the Chanticleers on March 27 at 1 p.m. The game marks the first meeting between the two young programs, as the Aztecs played their first game in 2012 while the Chanticleers' program began in 2013.

The Aztecs welcome their first MPSF conference opponent to the Mesa as they take on UC Davis at home on March 5. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m. PT.

California 
The Golden Bears opened their season Friday, Feb. 26, falling to fellow MPSF conference member UC Davis 8-14. California had a 2-5 record before the pandemic shortened their 2020 season, including a 11-16 loss against the Aztecs in San Diego Feb. 28, 2020. Cal is coached by Brooke Eubanks who is in her seventh year at the helm of the Golden Bears program. Eubanks holds a 27-67 record as the head coach of the California lacrosse program including a 1-5 series record when coaching against the Aztecs.
