SAN DIEGO – San Diego State right fielder Jaden Fein was named Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday for his performances in helping the Aztecs win two of three games in their season-opening series vs. San Diego, Feb. 19-21.
With his award, Fein garnered the first weekly conference accolade of his career.
Against the Toreros, Fein posted a collective .533 batting average, leading the team with eight hits while tying for the top spot with seven runs batted in. With his effort, the SDSU redshirt sophomore totaled the same number of RBIs in three games as he did in 15 appearances during the shortened 2020 campaign.
In addition, Fein led the Aztecs with a .727 batting average (8-11) with runners on base and hit a team-best .714 with runners in scoring position (5-7). He also topped the squad with a 75 percent success rate in advancing runners (9-12) and shared team lead with three RBIs with runners on third base with less than two outs.
In the series opener on Feb. 19, Fein went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, propelling the Scarlet and Black to a 14-7 triumph. day. During a four-run outburst in the second inning of that contest, the Simi Valley, California, native singled and scored, as the Aztecs vaulted in front for good. He also contributed an RBI double and scored during a three-run fifth, as SDSU extended its advantage to 8-4 after USD closed to within one at the top of the frame. The Aztec right fielder later added an RBI single in the sixth, helping to put the contest out of reach at 12-4.
The following day, Fein collected a team-high three hits and four RBIs in SDSU's 19-18 come-from-behind thriller. He helped narrow the gap with a key two-run single in the seventh during a four-run spurt that kept the Aztecs with striking distance at 17-16.
In the series finale on Sunday, Fein went 2-for-5 with an RBI to close out the weekend.
Fein was named MW Co-Freshman of the Year in 2019 to go with Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball magazine. Prior to the 2021 campaign, he was selected to the preseason all-MW team and was tabbed as the conference's Preseason Player of the Year by Baseball America.
San Diego State jumps back into action to battle UC San Diego in a four-game series on Feb. 26-28. The Aztecs and Tritons will clash at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Friday and Saturday before the two sides square off in a Sunday doubleheader on the UCSD campus.
