Men’s Golf Completes Day Two of The Prestige

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- The ninth-ranked San Diego State men's golf team moved up two spots to a tie for 13th place on the second day of The Prestige Tuesday on the par-71, 7,100-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West.
 
With the course playing almost a stroke higher (73.92) than Monday's first round, the Aztecs shot a 9-over-par 293 today and are tied with Colorado at 15-over 583 after two rounds. No. 5 Pepperdine vaulted into the lead with a Tuesday low of 5-under 279 and is at -8 through 36 holes. No. 3 Arizona State and No. 11 Arizona are tied for second at -5, while North Carolina (E) and No. 17 SMU (+1) round out the top 5.
 
Senior Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS) paces SDSU after two rounds and is tied for 25th at 1-over 143 following a 3-over 74 Tuesday. Starting on the 10th hole, Jin got out to a hot start with birdies on the par-4, 337-yard 11th and par-5, 566-yard 12th, but failed to get another one the rest of the way, while posting two bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-3, 181-yard seventh. Still, Jin is tied with seven others in 25th in a field where only 18 players are under par through 36 holes.
 
Senior Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand), meanwhile, is two shots back of Jin in a tie for 41st at 3-over 145 after shooting a 6-over 77. Anupansuebsai, the reigning Mountain West Golfer of the Year, had a wild day with five birdies, including a three straight on No. 15 (par 4, 431 yards), No. 16 (par 5, 537 yards) and No. 17 (par 3, 180 yards), four bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey.
 
Junior Joey Moore (Billings, Montana) had the biggest jump for San Diego State, moving from a tie for 114th to a tie for 77th following a 1-under 70. One of 23 players to shoot under par in the second round, Moore is at +7 heading into tomorrow's final round. Moore had five birdies and four bogeys on the day, ending his round on a high note with a birdie on the par-4, 359-yard ninth hole.
 
Senior Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) is tied with Moore and six others in 77th after carding a 3-over 74. Sugimoto birdied the 12th, but had four bogeys over the final 10 holes.
 
Junior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) was three shots better Tuesday at 4-over 75 and is tied for 99th at +11.
 
Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg leads The Prestige after two rounds at -6, with Arizona State's David Puig (-4), TCU's Jacob Skov (-3) and California's Aaron Du (-3) a few shots back. Jin is just three shots from the top 5, where five golfers are tied for fifth at -2.
 
The Prestige wraps up Wednesday with the final round as San Diego State tees off from the first hole at 7:40 a.m. PT with Colorado and Marquette.

Freshmen Jack Heath (Charlotte, N.C.) and Liam Koeneke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), meanwhile, continued their play at the Prestige Individual Tournament at Coral Mountain Golf Club on the par-72, 7,145-yard layout. Heath followed up his 71 on Monday with a 4-under 69 today and is in a tie for eighth at -5. Koeneke's 3-under 69 today has him at +1 for the tournament and in a tie for 27th. Heath and Koeneke begin their final round Wednesday at 9:20 a.m. PT and 8:20 a.m. PT, respectively.
