WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – Battling chilly temperatures and unpredictable, gusty winds, the San Diego State men's golf team carded a 6-over-par 294 Monday on the par-72, 6,992-yard North Ranch Country Club on the first day of the Southwestern Invitational presented by Topgolf. The Aztecs, who are competing in their first event since March 9-10, 2020, are in third place out of 12 teams.

SDSU, which teed off at 8 a.m. PT, played through temperatures in the low 50s with gusty winds of 20-to-30 mph. At +6, San Diego State easily bettered its playing partners Georgia Tech (+15), California (+17) and tournament host Pepperdine (+20). Arizona State (+4) and SMU (+5) are the only two teams ahead of the Aztecs, while Louisville (+8) and USC (+13) round out the top 5.

Junior Joey Moore (Billings, Mont.) led the way for SDSU with an even-par 72. Moore bogeyed four of the first six holes but went 3-under across the final 12 holes. He finished with five birdies and five bogeys on the day.

Three other San Diego State players finished the first day among the top 20 in junior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS), senior Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) and senior Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS). Guezzale sits in a tie for 12th at 1-over 73 after offsetting five bogeys with four birdies. Sugimoto, meanwhile, is tied for 15th at 2-over 74 with four birdies and six bogeys. Jin carded a 3-over 75 and is tied for 18th after posting 14 pars, one birdies and four bogeys.

Senior Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) will look to rebound from a 6-over 78 beset by a double bogey and five bogeys. Anupansuebsai, the reigning Mountain West Golfer of the Year, only birdied the par-5, 526-yard 12th hole.

The Southwestern Invitational presented by Topgolf continues Tuesday with the second round, as San Diego State tees off in the final group alongside Pepperdine, Georgia Tech and California starting at 10:20 a.m. PT on hole No. 1.
