WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The San Diego State men's golf team is tied for third place at the Southwestern Invitational presented by Topgolf after firing a 1-under-par 287 Tuesday in the second round at the par-72, 6,992-yard North Ranch Country Club.

The Aztecs, who are competing in their first event since March 9-10, 2020, are tied with SMU in third at 5-over 581, two shots behind Louisville (+3) and four clear of fifth-place and host Pepperdine (+9). SDSU was in second place for the majority of the second round but slipped late in the day. Arizona State held onto its first-round lead and is the only school under par at 2-under.

San Diego State has two players in the top 5 after 36 holes in juniors Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) and Joey Moore (Billings, Mont.). Guezzale carded a 4-under 68 on Tuesday, tied for the third-lowest round of the day, and is tied for third overall out of 66 players at 3-under 141. Guezzale started out the morning with a birdie on the par-4, 462-yard first hole, but then double-bogeyed the par-4, 415-yard second. Following a par on the par-3, 228-yard third hole, Guezzale reeled off three consecutive birdies and then birdied the par-4, 386-yard ninth to finish the front nine with a 33. Guezzale, however, cooled down on the back nine, logging six pars, two birdies and a bogey for his 68.

Moore, who shot an even-par 72 in tough conditions on Monday, was one shot better today with a 1-under 71 and is tied for fifth with three others at 1-under 143. Moore played steady all day, recording three birdies (No. 1, No. 12 and No. 15) and 13 pars with just two bogeys.

Senior Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) is tied for 26th after two days at 5-over 149 following a 3-over 75 today. Sugimoto had two birdies and five bogeys in the second round.

Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS) remained one shot back of Sugimoto in a tie for 31st (+6) after equaling his first-round score with a 3-over 75. Jin was at 3-under through 14 holes but went couldn't overcome a bogey-quadruple bogey-bogey three-hole stretch. He finished his uneven round with six birdies, five bogeys and the aforementioned quad bogey.

Senior Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand), meanwhile, bounced back from a 6-over 78 on Monday with a 1-over 73 in the second round today. The highlight of the penultimate round for Anupansuebsai was an eagle on the par-5, 474-yard 15th hole. In all, the reigning Mountain West Golfer of the Year had the eagle, three birdies, two bogeys and two double bogeys, and is tied for 33rd at 7-over 151.

Arizona State's David Puig is the individual leader after two rounds at 8-under 136 thanks to a Tuesday-low 66 (-6). Louisville's Matthias Schmid trails Puig by three shots (-5), while SMU's Noah Goodwin is tied with Guezzale in third at 3-under.

The final round of the Southwestern Invitational presented by Topgolf wraps up Wednesday. The Aztecs are paired with ASU, Louisville and SMU, starting at 8:55 a.m. PT on hole No. 1.
