SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State volleyball team added to its already stellar 2021 recruiting class after head coach Brent Hilliard announced the commitment of prep star Carsyn Schuch, a senior at Deer Valley High School in Glendale, Arizona.

A 5-6 libero, Schuch will arrive on campus later this summer and will be eligible to compete for the Aztecs in time for the 2021 fall season.

"Carsyn is just the ball control player that we need moving forward," Hilliard said.  "She can pass at an extremely high level and complements this skill with an uncanny knack to play defense.  She reads the game extremely well and is fearless on hard driven balls from the other team's attack.  Our back court will benefit greatly from Carsyn's presence."

A consistently decorated recruit, Schuch garnered 4A West Valley Region Defensive Player of the Year accolades all four years at Deer Valley High, earning first-team all-region honors during that span as well.

As a prep, Schuch scooped up 1,742 digs for her career (4.2/set) to go with 176 service aces and 186 assists, according to MaxPreps.

During her senior season that was abbreviated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Schuch averaged a career-high 4.8 digs (276 total) in 57 sets played while adding 44 assists and 26 aces.

As a junior in 2019, Schuch averaged 4.2 digs (500 overall) and served up 54 aces in 119 sets, propelling the Skyhawks to the Arizona 4A state semifinals.

Not to be outdone, Schuch has witnessed success at the club level, helping the Arizona Sky to the 17 Open Division title at the 2017 Las Vegas Classic.

With her addition, Schuch joins fellow 2021newcomers Mikela Labno (OH - Hilmar, Calif.), Kalani Ruri (RS/S - Kawerau, New Zealand) and Sara Mukaj (MB - Modena, Italy), who signed with the Aztecs last November.

San Diego State is scheduled to commence its spring campaign with a two-match series against UNLV on Feb. 5-6 in Las Vegas. The Aztecs' home openers are slated for Feb. 12-13 with back-to-back clashes vs. Fresno State.
