SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's basketball team (1-2) will have their first true road game on Saturday when they play at the University of San Diego (0-0) at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed on the WCC Network.
Aztec Notes
• The Aztecs fell to California Baptist (3-0) 75-71 in their home opener Wednesday afternoon. SDSU went on an 8-0 run late in the game to pull within one point but saw the Lancers' Ane Olaeta score 10 points in the final two minutes to hold off the Aztecs.
• Sophia Ramos led the Aztecs once again, finishing with 26 points, 24 of which came in the second half. Mercedes Staples nearly had a double-double with eight points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
• Ramos, the reigning Mountain West Player of the Week is averaging 21.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game through SDSU's first three games. As of Thursday morning, she is top 50 in the nation in 10 stat categories including points (8th), free throws made (13th), minutes (13th), field goals made (21st), and points per game (49th).
• Mercedes Staples had her first career game with double-digit rebounds on Wednesday with 10. She is tied with Ramos with a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game.
• The Aztecs are top 40 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (30th, .396) and three-point field goal percentage defense (37th, .205).
• Freshmen Kamaria Gipson and Kim Villalobos were impressive in their collegiate debut vs CBU. Gipson had seven points and seven rebounds and three steals in 23 minutes and Villalobos had five points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes
• Guards Asia Avinger and Jayden Perez are out for the year with leg injuries. Avinger was tabbed the Mountain West preseason Freshman of the Year
Opponent Notebook (San Diego)
• This will be the first game of the season for San Diego.
• They went 20-11 overall last season and 13-5 in WCC play, good for second place. They qualified for the WNIT tournament before it was canceled due to the cornonavirus pandemic.
• They return 11 letter winners and three starters.
• Myah Pace is their leading returning scorer (11.9 points per game).
• The Toreros also return Jordyn Edwards, a Colorado State transfer, who averaged 10.1 points and 3.6 assists a season ago.
• USD added three-point sharpshooter Steph Gorman from Utah State in the offseason.
• Head coach Cindy Fisher (16th season) has led the Toreros to seven postseason appearances and is a two-time WCC Coach of the Year.
Series Notes
• San Diego State leads the all-time series 29-14.
• The Aztecs are 9-7 all-time at USD.
• The Toreros have won six of the last seven meetings.
• Their first meeting was Feb. 28, 1978, an 83-31 SDSU win.
