SCENE SETTER (through games of Nov. 14)
* San Diego State (3-1) opens a pivotal two-game road stretch against teams vying for a berth in the conference championship on Saturday when the Aztecs travel to Reno, Nev., to face Mountain West tri-leader Nevada (4-0) in an afternoon matchup. Next week SDSU plays at Fresno State (3-1).
* SDSU is 2-for-2 in redemption games this season following a 34-10 victory over Hawai'i last Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. The Aztecs raced to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised to the 24-point win, avenging a 14-11 loss a year ago in Honolulu. Earlier this season, San Diego State defeated Utah State, 38-7, in Logan after suffering a 23-17 setback in 2019.
* San Diego State posted a 10-3 record last season and will get an opportunity to face the third and final opponent that handed the Aztecs a loss. Nevada defeated SDSU, 17-13, a year ago and has won the last two meetings between the teams.
* Since the start of the 2019 season, SDSU is 6-1 in road games. That is tied for the fifth-best record nationally.
* The Aztecs are 3-1 after four games for the third consecutive season. The last five times SDSU has opened with a 3-1 record it has gone on to advance to a bowl game. The last three times SDSU owned a 3-1 record after four games (2016, 2018 and 2019), the Aztecs averaged 9.3 wins, won a league title (2016) and two bowl games (2016 and 2019).
* Senior running back Greg Bell became the first Aztec player in school history to open his SDSU career with four consecutive 100-yard rushing games. The Nebraska transfer carried 19 times for 160 yards and two touchdowns, and ranks fifth nationally (third among players that have played at least three games) in rushing yards per game (134.3).
* With four consecutive 100-yard rushing games, Bell's streak is fourth in FBS play (see list at bottom of the page). It is the longest by any Aztec since Rashaad Penny's five-game streak in 2017 and is tied for the ninth-longest streak in SDSU history.
* San Diego State has held five consecutive opponents to less than 300 yards of total offense (nation's longest active streak) and held 18 straight opponents to less than 450 yards of total offense (tied for the third-longest active streak).
* San Diego State defense allows only 3.94 yards per play and forces a three and out 43.1 percent of the time. Both numbers lead the nation. Other rankings of note: 2nd in total defense (243.5), 3rd in rushing offense (280.3), 3rd passing yards allowed (152.3), 4th in scoring defense (12.8), 4th in tackles for loss (9.0), 5th third down conversion defense (23.7), 7th in rushing defense (91.3), 9th in time of possession (34:10), 10th in passing efficiency rating (105.41) and 11th in sacks (3.5).
* San Diego State's physical play can be shown in average rushing yards for and against. SDSU averages 280.3 yards rushing (3rd nationally) and 91.3 rushing yards allowed (7th nationally). The +189.0 yard margin in the run game ranks third in FBS behind triple option teams Air Force (+217.7) and Army West Point (+191.4).
* All three of San Diego State's victories have come by at least 24 points. San Diego State and Brigham Young are tied for the national lead with 75.0 percent of their games this season resulting in a victory of at least 24 points. See list at the bottom of the page.
