SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's basketball program has announced it will host the BYU Cougars in Viejas Arena on Dec. 18, 2020, in the continuation of a series that has produced some of each program's most memorable moments in recent history.
SDSU has won the last four meetings with BYU, the longest winning streak for the Aztecs in the 73-game series, which dates back to the 1940-41 season. Last year, San Diego State defeated the Cougars, 76-71, in Provo, which snapped a six-game losing streak in games played at Brigham Young. That victory was the first major test for an SDSU team which would go on to a 30-2 record, reach as high as No. 4/4 in the national polls, and win the Mountain West regular-season title. Prior to that matchup, the last Aztec win in Provo came on a Chris Walton buzzer beater on Jan. 8, 2005, a total of 5,418 days.
The last meeting in San Diego occurred on Dec. 22, 2018, a 90-81 SDSU win in which Matt Mitchell and Jordan Schakel scored 22 and 12 points, respectively, and Devin Watson led all scorers with 23 points. It was the first time BYU had played at San Diego State since Feb. 26, 2011, when Jimmer Fredette scored 25 points to lead the No. 7 Cougars to an 80-67 victory against Kawhi Leonard and the No. 6 Aztecs. SDSU beat BYU in the championship game of the Mountain West Conference tournament that season, and the Cougars then left the conference.
The all-time series favors BYU, 48-25, but in games played on the Aztecs home floor, that advantage is trimmed to just one victory, 18-17.
Start time and broadcast coverage will be announced at a later date.
