2018 - Football's Defense Stymies rv/No. 24 Boise State, 19-13
Playing without starting quarterback Christian Chapman and starting running back Juwan Washington, the San Diego State defense used a stifling defense and an opportunistic offense in a 19-13 victory at rv/No. 24 Boise State in Boise, Idaho. Sophomore Chase Jasmin ran for 78 yards and a touchdown, while true freshman Jordan Byrd had a 72-yard touchdown run. The Aztec defense, meanwhile, held Boise State to 229 total yards, its lowest output since gaining 206 yards against 13th-ranked Michigan State on Aug. 31, 2012 and lowest in a home game since Oct. 24, 1998 vs. Utah State (203 yards).

Big Wins for Volleyball in 1982, 1986, 1995
The San Diego State volleyball team has witnessed its share of success against top-ranked opponents throughout the program's 44-year history and the week of Oct. 5-11 has been no exception.

On Oct. 9, 1982, the Aztecs, ranked third in the AVCA/Tachikara Coaches Poll, defeated No. 2 USC in a five-set thriller ((7-15, 15-13, 16-14, 14-16, 15-6) at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.

SDSU's Vicki Cantrell led all players with 27 kills and a .389 hitting percentage, while Toni Himmer (18), Sue Hegerle (13), Mary Holland (10) and Angela Rock (10) also recorded double-digit put-aways for the Scarlet and Black.

Despite trailing in kills (82-80), the Aztecs committed seven fewer attack errors, out-hitting the Women of Troy .245 to .222 while maintaining a 24-21 edge in team blocks. USC, which held a 22-10 advantage in service aces, was also victimized by 10 ball-handling errors.

SDSU's victory raised the team's record to 15-2 at that point in the season, sparking a 12-match winning streak.

The Aztecs set a program record with 39 wins during the 1982 campaign (39-6), highlighted by their third WCAA championship in a four-year span and a second straight third-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Individually, Cantrell, Himmer and Holland all received first-team All-America recognition that season, with Holland earning NCAA Final Four all-tournament honors. In addition, Himmer was named WCAA Player of the Year. The aforementioned trio is enshrined in the Aztec Hall of Fame.

Not be outdone, San Diego State was victorious this same week in 1986, defeating two ranked opponents to win the Texas Classic in Austin, Oct. 9-11. After defeating Texas Tech in three straight (15-13, 16-14, 15-9), the Scarlet and Black swept past No. 20 Georgia (15-2, 15-13, 15-2) on day two of the tournament, followed by a five-set nail-biter over the host and eighth-ranked Longhorns (13-15, 15-13, 15-11, 10-15, 15-11). The Aztecs entered the event with a No. 1 AVCA ranking and maintained the top spot for another three weeks.

Fast forward to Oct. 7, 1995 inside Peterson Gym, where San Diego State, ranked 23rd in the USA Today/AVCA poll, knocked off No. 19 Brigham Young at home in four sets (15-12, 15-9, 14-16, 15-10).

Powered by Ginger Ernest's match-high 29 kills, the Aztecs also received a series of outstanding performances by Martina Vitkova ( 17 kills, 5 BA), Jennifer Hamilton (11 kills, 5 BA) and Juliana Cezar (10 kills, 12 digs, 3 aces). Additionally, Carrie Mapes led all players with a .643 hitting percentage (9-0-14), while Andrea Clark dished out a match-best 66 assists.

SDSU finished with a 27-5 record and a No. 13 final AVCA ranking in 1995 after winning the Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship and advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Mountain Regionals. Hamilton was named WAC Co-Player of the Year and earned first-team all-conference honors, joining Vitkova, Cezar and Ernest.
