SAN DIEGO – Head coach Ryan Hopkins has announced the signing of Iñigo Villaldea Eraña, a midfielder from Gijón, Spain.
"Iñigo is a perfect fit for our style of play," Hopkins explained. "His ability to pass the ball forward will help construct our attacks and he is dangerous from anywhere around the box. Defensively, his work rate, positioning and tackling all suit our pressing style. He has a professional attitude and approach to the day-to-day details, and he will help our culture immensely."
The six-foot center mid has been playing for Sporting de Gijón, one of the top youth academics in Spain. This past season he scored nine goals and dished out three assists in 16 starts after registering eight points in the 2018-19 season. Sporting de Gijón finished as the runner-up in their league in each of the past two seasons.
"I decided to go to San Diego State because of the great opportunity," Villaldea Eraña said. "It will be a new experience for me, and I am very excited to start it."
Villaldea Eraña is the third signing since Hopkins was named head coach in January and will be the 11th newcomer to suit up for the Aztecs in the fall. SDSU's 2020 recruiting class is ranked top ten in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer and tops in the Pac-12.
