SAN DIEGO – The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) named a school record eight Aztec rowers to its list of CRCA National Scholar Athletes for the 2020 season, marking the third consecutive year SDSU has set a new program-high (six in 2019 & five in 2018).
The 2020 SDSU scholar athlete honorees include seniors Brooke Boron, Laura Keane and Naomi Marroquin, juniors Kaytlin Barker, Hannah Broadland and Julia Camillucci and sophomores Kyler Sloan and Greta Viss.
Laura Keane (Red Bluff, Calif.) earned her third career scholar athlete award. An interdisciplinary studies major, she sat in the bow seat of the first varsity eight boat for all three of SDSU's races this season.
Brooke Boron (Valencia, Calif.), Hannah Broadland (Sacramento, Calif.) and Julia Camillucci (Auburn, Calif.) all earned scholar athlete status for the second time. Boron, a kinesiology (pre-physical therapy) major, and Broadland, a journalism (media studies) major, were both in the first varsity eight boat that went toe-to-toe with No. 20 UCLA in their final race of the season. Camillucci, an interdisciplinary studies major, was invited to the USRowing U23 national team selection camp this summer along with Broadland.
Kaytlin Barker (Folsom, Calif.), Naomi Marroquin (San Diego, Calif.), Kyler Sloan (Sacramento, Calif.) and Greta Viss (Modesto, Calif.) all earned their first career CRCA scholar athlete honor. Barker and Sloan are biology majors, Marroquin is an interdisciplinary studies major and Viss studies psychology.
2020 Scholar Athlete Awards requirements have been modified for the 2020 season. Student athletes must be in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of eligibility, must be ranked performance-wise in the top 50% of their team, or in the "NCAA Squad" (whichever is smaller) at the conclusion of the 2020 season*, and must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher for their career, and through the fall semester or quarter for the current competition year.
