WOODLAND, Calif. – A total of seven San Diego State lacrosse players were named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation all-academic team, the conference announced Tuesday morning.
The seven selections in alphabetical order feature sophomore Shelby Hook, junior Hailey Kovinsky, sophomore Courtney Robinson, junior Julia Sheehan, senior Taylor Sullivan, senior Morgan Taylor, and sophomore Cailin Young.
To be eligible for MPSF all-academic consideration, a student-athlete must carry a 3.00-or-higher cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore academically, finish one full academic year at their school and compete in 50 percent-or-more of their team's competitions in a given season.
Kovinsky and Sheehan each earn the honor for the second consecutive season while Sullivan and Taylor earned the distinction for the third year in a row. Young, Hook, and Robinson are selections to the all-academic conference team for the first time in their careers.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Aztecs' 2020 campaign featured only five competitions as the team ended with a 3-2 record. In their short season, SDSU topped two Pac-12 programs, went undefeated on their home field and topped first-time Atlantic-10 opponent George Mason.
Hook made appearances in four of the Aztecs' 2020 games, snagging a ground ball in the Scarlet and Black's 16-11 victory over the California Golden Bears. The Temecula, Calif. native is an interdisciplinary studies major with a 3.19 cumulative GPA.
In her third season on The Mesa, Kovinsky started in all five of SDSU's 2020 competitions, accumulating four ground balls and one caused turnover. The junior currently holds a 3.4 cumulative GPA as an international business major with an emphasis in Spanish and Western European countries.
Robinson continued her success as an Aztec in her sophomore season, seeing time on the field in all five 2020 matchups. Her sophomore totals included a goal, two draw controls, three ground balls, and a caused turnover. The journalism major with an emphasis in public relations finished her second year donning the Scarlet and Black with a 3.38 cumulative GPA.
One of the Aztecs' four captains, Sheehan made a splash in the Aztecs' short season, starting in all five games. The junior recorded a staggering stat line of three goals, seven assists, two free position goals, eight ground balls, and a caused turnover. She holds a 3.41 GPA as a business administration major with an emphasis in marketing.
A three-time MPSF All-Academic honoree and 2020 captain, Sullivan has a tremendous season, appearing in all five of the Aztecs' 2020 competitions. The senior totaled eight points on six goals and two assists while accumulating four ground balls, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls. The Annapolis, Md. native is a business administration major with an emphasis in sales marketing and has accumulated a 3.17 GPA in her four years at San Diego State.
Fellow three-time MPSF All-Academic honoree and captain Morgan Taylor finished the 2020 campaign with starts in all five games while tabbing the team's third-most goals. Her stat line for the shortened season included eight goals, four assists, one free-position goal, five ground balls, and five caused turnovers. The business administration major with a specialization in IMC has a 3.22 cumulative GPA.
With the highest GPA by a second-year player, Cailin Young had an inspiring season on both ends of the field for the Aztecs. The midfielder had two multi-goal games against both USC and California while tallying five goals, an assist, a free-position goal, six ground balls and 26 draw controls throughout 2020. Young is a sustainability major with a staggering 3.8 cumulative GPA.
