SAN DIEGO – All 19 athletic programs at San Diego State exceeded the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) standards issued by the NCAA with three programs retaining a perfect multi-year APR score and five earning a perfect single-year score. The 19 varsity sports (represented by 18 scores as indoor and outdoor track & field receive one score) were all at least 31 points ahead of the minimum multi-year score of 930 established by the NCAA.
The volleyball, women's golf and women's tennis programs each have a perfect multi-year APR score of 1,000 and have been recognized by the NCAA for being in the top 10 percent on their sport, while 15 teams altogether have a multi-year score of 980 or higher.
The 2018-19 APR report is inclusive of only those student-athletes who were on athletic aid and is a four-year rolling average to include the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. Scholarship student-athletes each semester receive one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face consequences, including practice restrictions and playing-season reductions. The Aztec athletic department's multi-year APR average for all sports for the 2018-19 report is 985.
Volleyball, women's golf and women's tennis were joined by the rowing and water polo programs who attained a perfect single-year APR score of 1,000. Additionally, 11 teams attained a single-year APR score of at least 980.
"The release of SDSU's 2018-19 APR data is an opportunity to acknowledge the academic achievement of our student-athletes, and the coaches and staff who support their academic experience," Senior Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services Bobby Smitheran said. "An athletics department multi-year average of 985 with all teams above a 960 multi-year score, demonstrates that Aztec student-athletes are striving in the classroom and engaging athletic department resources that supports their holistic development."
Earlier this month, 361 San Diego State student-athletes were recognized as scholar-athletes, just one off a school record of 362 set the previous year. To be an Aztec scholar-athlete, one needs a semester GPA of 3.20 or higher, or have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
"In addition to our 361 scholar-athletes, 91 student-athletes are on pace to graduate this 19-20 academic year," Smitheran added. "I am appreciative of our coaching staff for being partners in the educational experience of our student-athletes, and the student-athlete academic support services staff for their commitment and efforts to support our student-athletes."
