SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State athletic department announced today that The Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation has donated $2.5 million toward construction of the new Aztec Stadium in Mission Valley.

The 35,000-seat multi-use stadium is part of the larger SDSU Mission Valley Campus Master Plan which was approved by the Board of Trustees in January. SDSU Mission Valley will provide the University with the space to grow enrollment, expand research and innovation programs and add much needed housing for students, faculty, staff and the general community, including affordable housing. Finally, the plan creates a long-awaited regional community River Park.

"I am grateful to the Zable Foundation for their generous gift toward this generational changing project," said SDSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics John David Wicker. "This project will change the landscape of education in this region for generations and the stadium is the cornerstone of this transformational venture."

"Our focus with the Zable Foundation is to support projects and programs that make a difference in the San Diego community," said Warren Magill, president of the Foundation. "SDSU Mission Valley is an initiative that will make a substantial impact on higher education, sports and community engagement all while achieving the philanthropic goals of our founders. This project will be an economic stimulus and jobs creator for San Diegans, so on behalf of the board of directors, we are honored to support the new Aztec Stadium in Mission Valley."

The stadium will be located in the northwest corner of the site, which allows SDSU to continue to use the existing SDCCU Stadium while construction of the new multi-use stadium is completed. Earlier this week, the athletic department began selling Founders Suites and Founders Club Seats for the venue.

The Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation is an organization dedicated to promoting health and scientific research while assisting with programs that benefit youth, underprivileged individuals and sports-related activities primarily in San Diego County.
