COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State's Fabian Roensdorf (Dortmund, Germany), Rafael Gonzalez Almazan (Madrid, Spain) and Ignacio Martinez (Weston, Fla.) were named to the all-Mountain West men's tennis team, as announced Thursday by the league office.
Gonzalez Almazan and Martinez garnered all-MW accolades in doubles, while Roensdorf received distinction in singles play during the 2020 campaign. With their honors, Gonzalez Almazan (2018) and Martinez (2019) merited all-MW doubles recognition for the second time in their respective careers, while Roensdorf was a first-time recipient.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, spring competition was suspended for the Aztecs after just 10 dual matches. While SDSU completed just one MW clash, the conference still honored 12 singles players and six doubles teams for their efforts throughout their entire spring season without a minimum match requirement.
Gonzalez Almazan and Martinez combined to form the Aztecs' most successful doubles team this past season, finishing with a 7-1 overall record, including a 3-0 mark at the No. 1 position in dual matches. The tandem provided the clinching doubles point in SDSU's shutout victories over UC Davis and San Diego Christian while emerging triumphant in another encounter against UC Santa Barbara.
In addition, Gonzalez Almazan and Martinez enjoyed a successful run at the prestigious Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships in La Jolla, California, compiling a 4-1 record after advancing to the quarterfinal round. Among the victories for the SDSU pairing featured an 8-5 upset in the first round over the fourth-seeded combo of Etienne Donnet and Mathieu Scaglia from Oklahoma State, which was ranked 21st nationally by the ITA at the time.
Roensdorf, meanwhile, competed at the No. 1 spot on the Aztecs' singles ladder in all 10 matches this spring, compiling four wins during that span. SDSU emerged triumphant in all four of the duals in which he won, as the Scarlet and Black raced past UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Davis and San Diego Christian.
Additionally, the Dortmund, Germany, native held his own against a pair of nationally ranked opponents, dropping hard-fought decisions to No. 41 Matej Vocel of Oklahoma State and No. 7 Keegan Smith of UCLA. He also had an unfinished battle against San Diego's August Holmgren, who was rated 52nd in the last ITA singles poll of the spring.
Earlier during the fall tournament schedule, Roensdorf posted a victory in the main draw of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, rallying for a three-set triumph over Carter Juan of Loyola Marymount, followed by another win in consolation play.
San Diego State finished with a 5-5 record and a 1-0 mark in the MW during the abbreviated 2020 season, highlighted by a 4-3 victory at Boise State on Feb. 23, which snapped a six-match road losing streak to the Broncos dating back to 1994.
