Aztec Women's Golf Season in ReviewAztec Women's Golf Season in Review

After three consecutive runner-up finishes, San Diego State won the 2019 Mountain West Championship by one stroke over Nevada. The Aztecs, however, will have to wait until the 2021 season to defend their conference title as the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the season was prematurely ended, SDSU captured the Lamkin Invitational on Feb. 10-11.

Below is a look back at the Aztecs' 2019-20 campaign by the numbers:

1SDSU captured the Lamkin Invitational on Feb. 10-11 at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
3San Diego State had three players go 3-0 in match play at the Lamkin Invitational, including juniors Sara Kjellker and Gioia Carpinelli, and senior Fernanda Escauriza.
3.75Senior Daniela Anastasi finished her career with the highest GPA (3.75) on the team (spring 2020 has not been added yet).
4The Aztecs had four top-5 finishes in seven events during the 2019-20 campaign.
6SDSU had six players with at least a 3.30 GPA through the fall 2019 term, including Daniela Anastasi, Gioia Carpinelli, Bernice Olivarez Ilas, Sammy Lee, Tatum Mahon and April Ranches.
7&6Sara Kjellker dominated on the first day of the Lamkin Invitational on Feb. 10, taking a pair of 7&6 victories in match play. In match play, where the goal is to have a lower score than your opponent to win the hole (a tie "squares" it), winning 7&6 is winning with six holes to spare.
66Gioia Carpinelli fired a 6-under 66 in the opening round of the Branch/McGuire Invitational from Sept. 9-10, which was the best round by an Aztec in the 2019-20 season and tied for the third-best round in program history.
72.73Sara Kjellker led the Aztecs with a 72.73 scoring average in 15 rounds.
209Sara Kjellker shot a 7-under 209 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge from Sept. 23-25, which matched the lowest 54-hole score by an Aztec since the fall of 2016 and tied for the sixth-best three-round score in program history.

Additional Notes* Sara Kjellker and Gioia Carpinelli each made the all-Mountain West First Team, as voted on by the league's coaches. Kjellker earned all-league honors for the third straight season (first team in 2017-18 and 2019-20, second team in 2018-19), while Carpinelli landed on the first team for a second consecutive year.
* Sara Kjellker was named the Mountain West Golfer of the Month in September (2019) and the league's golfer of the week on Feb. 13, 2020.
