SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's basketball team has four incoming freshmen joining the team for the 2020-21 season. GoAztecs.com caught up with the quartet to review their senior seasons as they get ready for their freshmen seasons on The Mesa.
 
Asia Avinger | 5'7" | Point Guard | Rosary HS | Cerritos, Calif.
Avinger comes to SDSU as the highest rated recruit under Coach Terry-Hutson. Armed with a smooth midrange jumper, she averaged 13.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists and was named to the California All-State Team and earned the Trinity League MVP award. One of the nation's best combo guards according to espnW, Avinger led Rosary HS (Fullerton, Calif.) to the CIF Southern California DI Regional championship before the tournament was suspended by COVID-19.
 
Kamaria Gipson – 6'3" | Center – A.C. Jones High School – Beeville, Texas
Gipson finished her storied high school career with 2,655 points, the 32nd most ever in Texas. An athletic post with tremendous rebounding skills, she averaged 22.5 points, 15.2 rebounds and 5.7 blocks per game as a senior and helped A.C. Jones High School go 33-3 and 14-0 in district and advance to the 4A State Regional Quarterfinals. Following the season, Gipson was named the District 31-4A MVP, her third straight year winning the award.
 
Flera "Flo" Vinerte | 6'2" | Forward | New Hope Academy | Riga, Latvia
Vinerte helped New Hope Academy (Landover Hills, Md.) go 23-8 and earn a season-ending national ranking of No. 45 according to Max Preps. A McDonald's All-American nominee, Vinerte is a skilled post who can pass and knock down threes. She helped New Hope Academy take third place at the NACA National Championships and was scheduled to play in the Buffalo Wild Wings Roundball Classic All-Star Showcase.
 
Kimberly Villalobos | 6'0" | Guard/Forward | Chaminade HS | Van Nuys, Calif.
Villalobos averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game as a senior was named First-Team All-Mission League after the season. The versatile Villalobos helped Chaminade HS to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I championships.
 
SDSU will also add Mercedes Staples, a midyear transfer from Minnesota to the 2020-21 roster. The Aztecs lost four seniors to graduation: Zayn DornstauderTaylor KalmerMonique Terry and Baylee Vanderdoes.
