HONOLULU – The San Diego State women's golf team slipped to sixth place in the final round of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational Wednesday afternoon on the par-72, 6,099-yard Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course in Kane'ohe, O'ahu.
The Aztecs, who entered the day in fifth after two rounds, collectively shot a 12-over-par 300 today and finished at 24-over 888 for the tournament. No. 3 Arizona State held on to its commanding two-round lead with an even-par-288 to win by 19 strokes at 12-under 852. TCU (+7), Ohio State (+8), Stetson (+13) and host Hawai'i (+22) rounded out the top 5.
Sarah Kjellker (Hollviken, Sweden) tied for 13th place to pace SDSU at 3-over 219, including a 2-over 74 today. Starting on the fourth hole, the junior posted three birdies on the day, including two of her final three holes on the par-4, 314-yard No. 1 and par-5, 481-yard No. 3, and five bogeys.
Junior Gioia Carpinelli had San Diego State's lowest round on Tuesday at even-par 72, moving up eight places and finishing in 21st at 5-over 221. Only eight players went lower than Carpinelli's 72 today as the Boppelsen, Switzerland, native offset three bogeys with birdies on the par-4, 368-yard ninth hole, the par-4, 378-yard 14th and the par-3, 175-yard 18th. Starting on the seventh hole, she parred her final six holes of the tournament.
Bernice Olivarez Ilas (Ayala Alabang, Philippines) tied for 29th at 8-over 224 after shooting a 4-over 76 today. The freshman, who started on hole No. 6, overcame seven bogeys in her first 15 holes to post back-to-back birdies on the par-5 third and the par-3 fourth, before parring the par-4 fifth for her 76.
Competing as an individual, sophomore April Ranches (San Diego) made the biggest move for the Aztecs, vaulting from a tie for 53rd into a tie for 36th with a final round 1-over 73 and a 54-hole score of 10-over 226. Ranches rebounded from a double bogey on her second hole of the day on the par-4, 293-yard 17th, by recording four birdies and three bogeys the rest of the way.
Junior Ella Adams (Adelaide, Australia) slipped to a tie for 39th at 11-over 227 after an 8-over 80 final round, while senior Fernando Escauriza (Asunción, Paraguay) ended up in a tie for 59th at 17-over 233, recording a 6-over 78 today.
Arizona State's Linn Grant won medalist honors at 7-under 209, defeating TCU's Sabrina Iqbal in a playoff that stretched five holes. Kennesaw State's Tai Anudit (-6), Ohio State's Aneka Seumanutafa (-5) and Arizona State's Raquel Olmos (-2) also finished in the top 5.
San Diego State will next head to Saddlebrooke, Ariz., for the three-day Mountainview Collegiate Invitational from March 20-22.
