CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The San Diego State men's golf team fired a final round 8-under-par 280 to move up four places and finish in a tie for second with No. 3 Arizona State at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on a rainy Tuesday on the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.
The 280 was tied for the lowest round of the day as the Aztecs finished with a 54-hole score of 4-under 860, one shot better than No. 5 Texas A&M (-3) and two shots clear of California (-2). Tennessee won the 19-team event at 8-under 856.
Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) carded a 1-under 71 over the final round for SDSU, finishing in a seven-way tie for fifth at 3-under 213. After stumbling out of the gate early at 2-over through the first eight holes, the junior got things rolling with birdies on four of the next nine holes. A bogey on his finishing hole, however, on the par-3, 236-yard third hole kept him from tying Texas A&M's Dan Erickson (-4) for fourth.
San Francisco's Tim Widing won medalist honors after finishing the 54 holes at 8-under 208, including a 3-under 69 in his final round. Arizona State's Cameron Sisk (-6) and California's Jamie Cheatham (-5) took second and third, respectively.
Junior Christian Banke (Danville, Calif.), meanwhile, fired a 3-under 69 in his final round to move from a tie for 22nd into a tie for 12th at 2-under 214. Starting on hole No. 5 on Tuesday, Banke fought off a bogey on the par-3, 187-yard sixth hole, by birdieing five of his next 14 holes to get to 4-under. A bogey on No. 3 dropped him down to 3-under, before a par on the par-4, 461-yard No. 4 completed his 69.
Competing as an individual, Steve Sugimoto (San Diego) went 1-under for his round today to move up two places and finish in a tie for 14th at 1-under 215. The junior started at hole No. 15 and was 2-over through six, but posted four birdies and a bogey the rest of the way to pencil in a 71.
Sophomore Leo Oyo (Tokyo) rebounded from a rough second round yesterday afternoon for a 2-under 70 today with birdies on the par-4 fifth hole, par-3 13th and par-4 17th. His lone blemish came when he bogeyed the par-4, 427-yard No. 9 hole. Coupled with his 68-79 scores yesterday, Oyo tied for 24th at 1-over 217.
Sophomore Youssef Guezzale, competing as an individual, matched Oyo with a 2-under 70 today. The San Diego native offset three bogeys with five birdies, including three straight on holes 6-8.
Newport Laparojkit (Montebello, Calif.) had a big improvement on Tuesday with a final round 2-under 70. After rounds of 74 and 78 yesterday, Laparojkit started out with three bogeys over his first six holes (he started on No. 6), but rallied with five birdies over his final 12 holes to move up 15 places into a tie for 55th at 6-over 222.
Sophomore Amadeo Figus (Rome) and junior Callum Bruce (Banff, Scotland) each completed their tournament in a tie for 69th at 9-over 225 as individuals. Figus shot a 1-under 71 today, recording five birdies and four bogeys. Bruce was at 1-over 73 on Tuesday, despite birdieing two of his first three holes after starting at No. 17. Bruce, however, couldn't recover from a stretch of four straight bogeys and five in six holes later in the round.
Junior Zihao Jin (Beijing) also competed on the team for SDSU, rebounding from his 82-73 yesterday to card a 1-under 71 in the final round today. He finished tied for 72nd for the tournament at 10-over 226.
In all, eight of the nine San Diego State golfers today were under par with the other (Bruce) shooting a 1-over-par 73.
Meanwhile, three other Aztecs competed as individuals at the Coronado Individual on the par-72, 6,590-yard Coronado Golf Course in Coronado, Calif. Sophomore Joey Moore (Billings, Mont.) tied for third at 3-under 213 thanks to a final round 69, while senior Ambrose Abbracciamento (Newtown, Pa.) tied for 15th at 4-over 220 and freshman Simone Armando Colozza (Rome) was 23rd (+15).
SDSU is back in action at the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore., from March 23-24.
