SDSU in Sixth at the Lamkin San Diego Classic

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The San Diego State men's golf team is in sixth place at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic after two rounds of play Monday on the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.
 
The Aztecs opened with a 2-under-par 286, before carding a 6-over 294 in the second round, collectively posting a 4-over 580 over the 36 holes. San Francisco is the only program in the 16-team field under par at 1-under-575, followed by No. 3 Arizona State (E) and Tennessee (E), No. 19 Colorado State (+3) and California (+3), and SDSU (+4).
 
Junior Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) leads the way for the Aztecs and sits in a tie for sixth place at 2-under 142, four shots behind Arizona State's front-runner Cameron Sisk (-6). A pair of USF players in Soren Lind and Tim Widing are tied for second at 5-under, while California's Kaiwen Liu (-4) is in fourth and CSU's Davis Bryant (-3) is in fifth, one shot clear of Anupansuebsai and five other players.
 
Anupansuebsai opened with a 72 in the first round, rallying from a 3-over 39 on the front nine with three birdies on the back nine for a 3-under 33. Anupansuebsai, who was in a tie for 21st after the first round, jumped up 15 places in the second after carding a 2-under 70. Anupansuebsai had four birdies in the second round and two bogeys. Unfortunately, a bogey on the par-4, 460-yard No. 18 ultimately kept him out of a spot in the top five after two rounds.
 
Competing as an individual, junior Steve Sugimoto (San Diego) finds himself in a tie for 16th at even-par 144 with rounds of 73 and 71. After offsetting four bogeys with three birdies in the first round, Sugimoto flipped the script in the second 18 with four birdies and three bogeys to get back to even par for the tournament.
 
Junior Christian Banke (Danville, Calif.) is a shot behind Sugimoto in a tie for 22nd at 1-over 145 after rounds of 72 and 73 today. In the opening round, Banke had four birdies and four bogeys for his even-par 72. In the second round, eagled the par-4, 377-yard seventh hole, but later double bogeyed the par-5, 485-yard No. 14. His 1-over 73 came with an eagle, a birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey.
 
Sophomore Leo Oyo (Tokyo) got off to a great start in the first round, firing a 4-under 68 that had him atop the leaderboard with Jackson Suber of Ole Miss, thanks to seven birdies against three bogeys. However, his second round got off to a rough start with a triple bogey 7 on the par-4, 368-yard first hole. He followed with birdies on No. 2 and No. 3, but only had one birdie the rest of the way and seven bogeys, ultimately shooting a 7-over 79. After two rounds, the 2020 winner at The Prestige is tied for 26th at 3-over 147.
 
Sophomore Youssef Guezzale (San Diego) sits in a tie for 42nd at 5-over 149 with rounds of 73 and 76, while competing as an individual.
 
After an opening round 2-over 74, senior Newport Laparojkit (Montebello, Calif.) struggled to a 6-over 78 in the second round and is tied for 70th with five others, including junior Callum Bruce (Banff, Scotland), who had a pair of 76s competing as an individual.
 
Sophomore Amadeo Figus (Rome) started out hot with a 2-under 70 thanks to three birdies and a lone bogey, but couldn't get things going in the second round with a 12-over 84. After two rounds, Figus is tied for 81st at 10-over 154 as an individual.
 
Junior Zihao Jin (Beijing) also competed on the team for SDSU, rebounding from an opening round 10-over 82 with a 1-over 73 in the second round and is tied for 87th at 11-over.
 
The final round of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic tees off at 8:30 a.m. PT Tuesday as San Diego State will be playing with California, Colorado State and Brigham Young from holes 4-7.
 
Meanwhile, three other Aztecs competed as individuals at the Coronado Individual on the par-72, 6,590-yard Coronado Golf Course in Coronado, Calif. Sophomore Joey Moore (Billings, Mont.) is tied for ninth after two rounds at even-par 144, while senior Ambrose Abbracciamento (Newtown, Pa.) is tied for 16th (+3) and freshman Simone Armando Colozza (Rome) is in 23rd (+10).
