At the end of the 2018 season, student-athletes brought forward to administrative staff possible CARA (countable athletically related activities) violations in the sport of women's volleyball, and we conducted an investigation and self-reported the findings to the NCAA.
On January 17, 2020, the Division 1 Committee on Infractions released the agreed upon Negotiated Resolution which details Level II-mitigated violations for the university. SDSU and the NCAA determined violations of countable athletically related activities (CARA), impermissible tryouts, an impermissible contact with a two-year prospect, and a failure of head coach responsibility.
As the NCAA report says, the lack of knowledge of rules was not due to a lack of education provided by the institution. Additionally, the enforcement staff confirmed that San Diego State implemented proper compliance monitoring systems and provided sufficient NCAA rules education.
The NCAA, San Diego State and the former head coach negotiated the agreed upon resolution to the violations.
As a result of the violations SDSU was prescribed the following penalties: one-year probation, a financial penalty, recruiting restrictions in 2019-20, a reduction in CARA hours, and other administrative penalties. Additionally, the former head coach was prescribed a show-cause order (two game suspension). While SDSU regrets the violations occurred, the staff cooperated during the investigation and the case has concluded.
