Aztecs Set for Mountain West Indoor Championships
The Aztec track and field team will return to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Mountain West Indoor Championships Feb. 27-29. The meet will be streamed on FloTrack, which requires a paid subscription.
 
The championship meet gets underway Thursday with the pentathlon at 10 a.m. PT. Last year, Asia Smith finished in second with 3,916 points, the third most points in a pentathlon in school history. She set a new PR in four of the five events and had top three finishes in the high jump, shotput and long jump. She will be competing alongside Sara Absten and Neele Schuten.
 
Friday gets started with the long jump at 12 p.m. PT and will also have the qualifying rounds for the 60m, 200m 400m, 800m, mile and 60m hurdles.
 
On Saturday, in addition the finals of the events listed above there is the shot put, high jump, pole vault, triple jump. The meet will end with the 4x400m relay, an event the Aztecs have the top time in by nearly eight seconds.
 
Aztec Tidbits
- San Diego State has finished in the top four at the Mountain West Indoor Championships every year since 2010 and in the top three in seven of the last eight years. Their last indoor conference championship came in 2013.
- The Aztecs have eight athletes ranked in the top three in their respective events in the Mountain West entering the conference championships: Danae Dyer (1st, 60m hurdles), Sakura Roberson (1st, 400m), Danae Dyer (2nd, 200m), Nyjari McNeil (2nd, 800m), Asia Smith (2nd, pentathlon), Molly Scharmann (T-2nd, PV), Kaitlin Heri (T-2nd, PV) and Jalyn Harris (3rd, 400m).
- The Aztecs 4x400m relay team beat the school record by nearly six seconds and has the top time in the Mountain West and 12th best in the nation. Their time is nearly eight seconds better than the second-best time in the Mountain West. The Aztecs have never had a 4x400m relay team make the NCAA Indoor Championships. The top 12 teams qualify.
- Danae Dyer has the top time in the 60m hurdles (8.28) and 2nd best time in the 200m (23.98).
- Sakura Roberson has the top time in the 400m in the conference (54.36).
- The Aztecs have three of the top four times in the 400m in the conference (Roberson, Harris & McNeil).
 - Nyjari McNeil set a school record in the 800m with a time of 2:08.30, the second-best time in the MW.
- SDSU has three of the top four pole vaulters (Scharmann, Heri and Funk) in the conference.
- Jada Moore set a SDSU freshman record in the 60m dash (7.49) and has the fourth best time in the conference.
- The Aztecs have three of the top six scorers in the conference in the pentathlon led by Asia Smith's 3,797 points.
- This will be the Aztecs fourth of five competitions in Albuquerque, N.M. Following the Mountain West Championships, they will be back for the NCAA Indoor Championships (March 13-14) there as well.
- The Aztecs have 36 underclassmen on the 2020 team and just five seniors.
- In addition to the 14 freshmen that joined the team, SDSU added five transfers giving them 19 newcomers.
- 38 of the 53 members on the team are from California.
- Last season, the Aztecs won the 4x400m relay at both the indoor and outdoor Mountain West Championships. The indoor squad set a school record and all four runners return this year. The outdoor squad returns three runners and has made the NCAAs the last two years after not making it since 2006.
- SDSU is one of the top pole vault programs in the country and have crowned 26 Mountain West Championships under assistant coach Rich Fox. Bonnie Draxler, who was the NCAA runner-up in both indoor and outdoor last season, has graduated but SDSU returns four vaulters and added Washington State transfer Molly Scharmann, who finished fourth at last year's Pac-12 Outdoor Championships.
