COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State's Leo Oyo (Tokyo) has been named the Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Week, the league announced Thursday. It is the first career weekly award for Oyo.
Oyo was the medalist at The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West, besting a field of 79 competitors, including eight of the top 25 golfers in the nation, according to Golfstat. It was his first career collegiate victory.
The sophomore won by a shot with a 54-hole total of 11-under 202, including a 5-under 66 in the final round on Wednesday. Oyo chipped in for eagle on the par-5 16th hole in the final round which moved him from one down to one up. He then two-putted for par on the par-3 17th and saved par from off the green with a pitch to two feet on the par-4 18th to secure the individual title.
Oyo led the Aztecs to a third-place finish at 11-under, trailing only No. 16 Texas (-20) and No. 1 Pepperdine (-14). SDSU ended up beating seven schools that were ranked higher in the latest Golfstat rankings.
SDSU will co-host the Lamkin Invitational at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif., from March 9-10.
