Football Adds Kyle Hoke to the Coaching Staff

SAN DIEGO – Kyle Hoke has been named an assistant coach with San Diego State, head coach Brady Hoke announced today. Hoke will coach the safeties.  
 
Hoke, the nephew of Brady Hoke, comes from a football coaching family as his father, Jon, is currently the defensive coordinator at Maryland and has spent time with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears and Houston Texans, as well as stints with SEC powers Florida, South Carolina and Missouri, among other Division I programs.
 
Kyle Hoke joins the Aztecs after spending the past season as the safeties coach at Indiana State. Hoke helped the Sycamores allow just 22.8 points and 338.3 yards per game. Under his watch, Michael Thomas was an honorable-mention all-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection after recording 79 tackles, a team-high three forced fumbles, two interceptions and three pass breakups, despite moving to safety from wide receiver in 2019.
 
Prior to working with the ISU coaching staff, Hoke coached the safeties at Texas State in 2018.
 
In 2017, Hoke served as the defensive coordinator at Division III power John Carroll, where his defense ranked second in the Ohio Athletic Conference in scoring defense (22.1). Linebacker Mason McKenrick earned the Gene Slaughter Award in 2017, given to the most outstanding linebacker in the OAC.
 
Hoke went to John Carroll after spending two seasons as a graduate assistant at South Carolina, where he worked primarily with the linebackers and was responsible for the running position and defensive breakdowns.
 
In 2014, Hoke was the defensive quality control coach at the United States Military Academy, working mostly with the defensive backs.
 
Hoke got his coaching start at Western Michigan, where he was a graduate assistant with the defensive backs and special teams in 2012 and 2013.
 
Hoke played four years at Ball State, including all 14 games his freshman season in 2008 under head coach Brady Hoke. That season, the Cardinals started out the season 12-0 and finished 22nd in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll.
 
Hoke received his bachelor's degree from Ball State in 2012.
