MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – San Diego State swimmers junior Elli Ferrin, senior Alma Thormalm, senior Courtney Vincent and junior Klara Thormalm opened the 2020 Mountain West Championships with a record-setting 200 Medley Relay swim on Wednesday inside the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The quartet touched the wall in 1:36.30, a new Mountain West All-Time record, Mountain West Championship Meet Record, SDSU program record all while also qualifying as an NCAA 'A' cut time. The swimmers donning the Scarlet and Black kicked off the conference title chase with the Aztecs' first MW title of 2020, crushing the record time set by the exact same group of swimmers at the 2019 conference meet and booking the relay team's ticket to the 2020 NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga.
The Aztecs' 800 Freestyle relay squad followed the lead of the 200 Medley Relay, topping the podium and earning the program's second conference championship of the day. Freshman Mia Ryan, senior Peyton Wilson, sophomore Milena Karpisz and senior McKenna Meyer added 64 points to SDSU's total when they touched the wall with a mark of 7:11.94.
On the springboard, senior Marie Yacopino and sophomore Ximena Lechuga Gonzalez shined in the 1-meter diving preliminary round, finishing tied-for-fourth with a score 282.10 and sixth with a score of 279.25, respectively. The duo moved onto the finals Wednesday night where Gonzalez earned a bronze finish with a finals score of 309.15 and Yacopino finished eighth with a score of 266.95. After finishing 11th with a score of 258.80 in the preliminary rounds, sophomore Gina Cazares earned a spot in the consolation finals Wednesday afternoon, earning a seventh-place finals finish with a score of 250.35 points.
