LA JOLLA, Calif. – On the final day of the 2020 Triton Invitational, the No. 21 San Diego State water polo fell behind after the first eight minutes in both its games, versus No. 17 Loyola Marymount and No. 22 CSUN, could not recover and finished the tournament in 12th place.

In the teams' first game of the day, the Aztecs got two goals each from Lucia Carballo, Maddy Parenteau and Sydney Hurst, but went down 3-1 after the first period and played catchup for the rest of the game.
 
LMU opened the scoring at the 6:22 mark and just shy of a minute later Carballo scored to level the game at 1-1.  Loyola Marymount found the back of the net twice in the final three minutes of the first quarter and took a 3-1 lead after eight minutes.
 
Parenteau got San Diego State back to within a goal at 3-2 on a tally with 3:54 to go before the half, but SDSU then saw LMU reel off four straight goals in the final three and a half minutes of the second quarter to lead 7-2 at the halfway point.
 
The third period belonged to the Aztecs.  They outscored the Lions 4-1 and got to within two goals, at 8-6, with eight minutes to play. Karli Canale got the score to 7-3 on a goal with 5:04 to go and after LMU bounced back with a goal, Sydney Hurst beat the Lions' goalie twice, at 2:35 and 0:36 to play in the third.  With the score 8-5, Parenteau scored with five seconds left in the frame to send it to the final period with SDSU within two goals.
 
The teams traded tallies in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, with Carballo and Shelby Kraft adding to the Aztecs total, but a pair of Lions' goals in the final two minutes put the game away and LMU took the victory 12-8.
 
Jordann Hiemback made five saves in the game for San Diego State.
 
San Diego State attempted 28 shots, led by six from Parenteau.  Dayna Bond took five shots.

With a pair of goals each, Emily Bennett and Casia Morrison led the Aztec offense against the No. 22 CSUN Matadors, while Isabelle Hastings, Sydney Hurst and Maddy Parenteau scored a goal apiece.
 
Parenteau gave the Aztecs a 1-0 lead just over 90 seconds into the game.  After a pair of CSUN goals put the Matadors up 2-1, Hurst got in the scorebook with a goal, her third of the day, to get SDSU back to level at 2-2.  A CSUN tally with 31 seconds to play in the opening period put the Matadors up 3-2.
 
In the second quarter, CSUN extended its lead to 4-2 with a goal at the 5:18 mark.  The Aztecs responded with 3:26 to go before the half with a Hastings strike to make it 4-3, but the Matadors got the final goal of the half and took a 5-3 lead into the intermission.
In the third quarter the teams traded goals.  CSUN scored first and Morrison responded to make it 6-4.  The Matadors pushed the advantage back to three goals at 7-4, but Bennett's tally in the final minute of the period sent the game to the fourth quarter with SDSU down 7-5.
 
CSUN scored the first two goals of the last quarter to take a 9-5 lead.  Morrison and Bennett responded with goals at 4:48 and 1:39, respectively, for the final score of 9-7.
 
Grace Halliday was in goal for the Aztecs and made three saves.  SDSU took 28 shots with Kraft leading the charge with five attempts.
