SAN DIEGO – San Diego State baseball junior Casey Schmitt garnered his second preseason All-America accolade after receiving second-team recognition as a utility player by PerfectGame.org on Tuesday.
According to the website, the Perfect Game/Rawlings All-American teams consist of three full teams with 17 players each. The honorees are selected based on a balance of past performance, expectations for the 2020 campaign and their prospective talent relative to the MLB Draft.
Last month, Schmitt landed on Collegiate Baseball magazine's preseason All-America second team at the same position, with the Aztecs collectively earning a No. 31 preseason ranking by the publication.
As a sophomore in 2019, Schmitt finished second on the team with a .315 batting average, contributing eight doubles, five home runs and 36 RBI to merit second-team all-Mountain West honors. Additionally, the Eastlake High alumnus compiled 21 appearances with four starts as a pitcher, logging a 3-3 record and a 3.77 ERA in 43.0 innings to go with a team-high eight saves.
In 2018, Schmitt was a consensus freshman All-American, establishing an Aztec single-season record with a 0.28 ERA (min. 30 IP), yielding just one earned run in 32 innings of work. He also hit .264 with one home run and 32 RBI, finishing the year as one of only two players nationally to carry a 2.00 ERA or lower (min. 15 IP) and drive in more than 30 runs.
Schmitt ended the 2018 campaign in style by becoming the first freshman in five years to capture most valuable player honors at the Mountain West Championships (Ty France) after smacking a key two-run double in SDSU's 14-5 title-clinching win over UNLV following a strong relief appearance on the mound vs. the Rebels the previous day when he allowed just one hit in three innings.
Schmitt and the Aztecs commence their 2020 season on Friday, Feb. 14, when they square off against Virginia Tech in the first game of the Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach tournament in Conway, South Carolina. SDSU will also face host Coastal Carolina (Feb. 15) and UNC Greensboro (Feb. 16) at the event.
